Catholics either claiming the Pope to be like God or Popes claiming to be like God:

French: “Faire la guerre contre le pape, dit Ravaillac à ses juges, c’est la faire contre Dieu, d’autant que le pape est Dieu, et Dieu est le Pape. – Mercure Francois de 1610”.

English: “To make war against the pope said Ravillac to his Judges, is to make war against God, seeing that the pope is God and God is the pope (Mercure Francois 1610)”. -Supplement aux anciennes editions du Grand dictionaire historique de Mr Louis Moreri, ou le me lange curieux de l'histoire sacre et profane (page 416 1st column). (Louis Moreri was a French priest and encyclopaedist)

A man whilst asking a question to Pope John II said:

"The leader of the Catholic church is defined by the faith as the Vicar of Jesus Christ (and is accepted as such by believers). The Pope is considered the man on earth who takes the place of the Second Person of the omnipotent God of the Trinity." – Page 3

The pope in his reply doesn’t rebuke the claim but adds more blasphemy and says:

“Returning to your question, I would like to recall the words of Christ together with my first words in St. Peter’s Square: “Be not afraid.” Have no fear when people call me the “Vicar of Christ,” when they say to me “Holy Father,” or “Your Holiness,” or use titles similar to these, which seem even inimical to the Gospel. Christ himself declared: “Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. Do not be called ‘Master’; you have but one master, the Messiah” (Mt 23:9-10). These expressions, nevertheless, have evolved out of a long tradition, becoming part of common usage. One must not be afraid of these words either”. - Crossing the Threshold of Hope by Pope John Paul II

“Dear Don Marino-I have read all the homilies I have made since my coming here in Venice, and only in the sermon for the anniversary of the election of the Holy Father, I said these exact words: ‘The Pope represents Jesus Christ Himself, and therefore is a loving Father. The life of the pope is a holocaust of love for the human family. His word is love. Love, his weapons; love, he answer he gives to all those who hate him; love, his flag i.e. the cross, which signed te greatest triumph on earth and in heaven”. - Cardinal  Joseph Sarto (Later Pope Pius X) Publications of the Catholic Truth Society, Volume 29, page 11.

"It seems that Pope John Paul II now presides over the universal Church from his place upon Christ's cross." Auckland Bishop Says Pope Presides From the Cross" AUCKLAND, New Zealand, SEPT. 20, 2004, Zenit.org (Catholic publication)

"In founders and foundresses [of the consecrated orders of nuns and priests, etc.] we see a constant and lively sense of the Church, which they manifest by their full participation in all aspects of the Church's life, and in their ready obedience to the bishops and especially to the Roman Pontiff. Against this background of love towards Holy Church, 'the pillar and bulwark of the truth' (1 Tim 3:15), we readily understand the devotion of Saint Francis of Assisi for 'THE LORD POPE', the daughterly outspokenness of Saint Catherine of Siena towards the one whom she called 'SWEET CHRIST ON EARTH', the apostolic obedience and the sentire cum Ecclesia of Saint Ignatius Loyola, and the joyful profession of faith made by Saint Teresa of Avila: 'I am a daughter of the Church'. We can also understand the deep desire of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus: 'In the heart of the Church, my mother, I will be love'. These testimonies are representative of the full ecclesial communion which the Saints, founders and foundresses, have shared in diverse and often difficult times and circumstances. They are examples which consecrated persons need constantly to recall if they are to resist the particularly strong centrifugal and disruptive forces at work today. A distinctive aspect of ecclesial communion is allegiance of mind and heart to the magisterium of the bishops, an allegiance which must be lived honestly and clearly testified to before the People of God by all consecrated persons, especially those involved in theological research, teaching, publishing, catechesis and the use of the means of social communication. Because consecrated persons have a special place in the church, their attitude in this regard is of immense importance for the whole people of God(Pope John Paul II, "Apostolic Exhortation on the Consecrated Life and Its Mission in the Church and in the World," to the bishops and clergy, religious orders and congregations, societies of apostolic life, secular institutes, and all the faithful, given in Rome, at Saint Peter's, March 25, 1996) (Emphasis added) (scroll down to ‘Sentire cum Ecclesia’)

“Latin: Deveniendo igitur ad Papae auctoritatem ; Papa est quasi Deus in Terra, unicos Christifidelum Princeps, Regum omninm Rex maximus, plenitudinem potestatis continens, cui Terreni simul , ac Coeiestis Imperii Gubcrtiacula ab Omnipotenti Deo credita funt

English: When we come therefore to the authority of the Pope; The Pope is as it were, God on Earth, the only Prince of the Christian faithful, the greatest King of all kings, containing the fullness of his power, to whom at the same time the governments of the Earth and the Celestial Empire have been entrusted by the Almighty God”. Rev. p.F. On commenting on Bull Unam Sanctum “No More is taught in his document, as of faith, that what all Catholics in every age have held namely, that subjection to the Bishop of Rome in matters of salvation is a necessary duty”. - ECCLESIASTICAL, BIBLICAL, Archaeological, AND HISTORICAL SUBJECTS by John Thein, page 113 left column.

“But the supreme teacher in the Church is the Roman Pontiff. Union of minds, therefore, requires, together with a perfect accord in the one faith, complete submission and obedience of will to the Church and to the Roman Pontiff, as to God Himself”. -Leo VIII, «On the Chief Duties of Christians as Citizens», Encyclical letter, 1890

"St. Clement, then, had reason to say that the priest is, as it were, a God on earth. God, said David, stood in the congregation of the gods? These gods are, according to St. Augustine, the priests of God. Innocent III has written: ‘Indeed, it is not top much to say that in view of the sublimity of their offices the priests are so many gods’.” -The dignity of the priesthood by Liguori p, 36

“But since We [Venerable Brethren, all Patriarchs, Primates, Archbishops and Bishops of the Catholic World] hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty, Who will have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the Truth, and now that Our advanced age and the bitterness of anxious cares urge Us on towards the end common to every mortal”. - The Reunion of Christendom, Pope Leo XIII

“Dr. Dollinger appends to this conclusion of his Declaration the following from the pope's official organ the Civilta Cattolica, of March 18, 1871: The pope is the supreme judge of the law of the land. In him, the two powers, the spiritual and the secular, meet as in their apex ; for he is the vicegerent [in place] of Christ, who is not only a Priest for ever, but also King of kings and Lord of lords. . . . The pope, by virtue of his high dignity, is at the summit of both powers”. - La Civilia Cattolica, March 18, 1871, quoted in Leonard Woosely Bacaon, An inside view of the Vatican Council (American Tract Society ed.), p.229, n.

The last line of the 1302 ad Bull Unam Sanctam... Issued by POPE BONIFACE VIII states; we declare, we proclaim, we define that it is absolutely necessary for salvation that every human creature be subject to the Roman Pontiff. -UNAM SANCTAM (Promulgated November 18, 1302)

"All the faithful must believe that the Holy Apostolic See and the Roman Pontiff [the Pope] possesses the primacy over the whole world, and the Roman Pontiff is the successor of blessed Peter, Prince of the Apostles, and is true vicar of Christ, and heed of the whole church, and father and teacher of all Christians; and that full power was given to him in blessed Peter to rule, feed, and govern the universal Church by Jesus Christ our Lord."--First Dogmatic Constitution on the Church of Christ, "Eternal Pastor," published in the fourth session of the Vatican Council, 1870, chap. 3, in Philip Schaff, Creeds of Christendom. vol. 2, p. 262.

"The Pope's authority is unlimited, incalculable; it can strike, as Innocent III says, wherever sin is; it can punish every one; it allows no appeal and is itself Sovereign Caprice; for the Pope carries, according to the expression of Boniface VIII, all rights in the Shrine of his breast. As he has now become infallible, he can by the use of the little word, "orbi," (which means that he turns himself round to the whole Church) make every rule, every doctrine, every demand, into a certain and incontestable article of Faith.  No right can stand against him, no personal or corporate liberty; or as the [Roman Catholic] Canonists put it-"The tribunal of God and of the pope is one and the same." -Ignaz von Dollinger, "A Letter Addressed to the Archbishop of Munich"  1871; as quoted in MacDougall, The Acton Newman Relations (Fordham University Press) pp. 119,120.

Latin: …qua Bonus Pastor a Ioanne Evangelista iis verbis describitur quae ex divino Salvatoris ore profluxerunt (2). Ipse ovilis ostium est: « Ego sum ostium ovium » (3). Hoc in Iesu Christi ovile, nonnisi Summo Pontifice ductore, quisquam ingredi potest; et homines turn solummodo, cum ei coniunguntur, tuto possunt salvi fieri, quandoquidem Romanus Pontifex Vicarius est Christi, eiusque in terris personam gerit.

English: "The Saviour Himself is the door of the sheepfold: 'I am the door of the sheep.' Into this fold of Jesus Christ, no man may enter unless he be led by the Sovereign Pontiff; and only if they be united to him can men be saved, for the Roman Pontiff is the Vicar of Christ and His personal representative on earth." (Pope John XXIII in his homily to the Bishops and faithful assisting at his coronation on November 4, 1958).

"This is our last lesson to you: receive it, engrave it in your minds, all of you: by God's commandment salvation is to be found nowhere but in the Church; the strong and effective instrument of salvation is none other than the Roman Pontificate.(Pope Leo XIII, Allocution for the 25th anniversary of his election, February 20, 1903; Papal Teachings: The Church, Benedictine Monks of Solesmes, St. Paul Editions, Boston, 1962, par. 653).

“Furthermore, in this one Church of Christ no man can be or remain who does not accept, recognize and obey the authority and supremacy of Peter and his legitimate successors”. Pope Pius XI, Encyclical, Mortalium animos, January 6, 1928,

“We also define that the holy apostolic see and the Roman pontiff holds the primacy over the whole world and the Roman pontiff is the successor of blessed Peter prince of the apostles, and that he is the true vicar of Christ, the head of the whole church and the father and teacher of all Christians, and to him was committed in blessed Peter the full power of tending, ruling and governing the whole church, as is contained also in the acts of ecumenical councils and in the sacred canons”. - Council of Basel-Ferrara-Florence, 1431-49 A.D

“The priest pardons as effectively as if the words fell from the lips of Christ. It is a power which transcends that of kings and emperors. The power of kings is over the bodies of men. But they stand impotent before the kingdom of the soul. The hand of the priest reaches up beyond the horizon of the sky, and with golden keys unlocks the treasury of God’s mercy and forgiveness and applies them to the souls of men”. - Faith Of Millions: The Credentials of the Catholic Religion, John A. O'Brien PhD (Roman Catholic), page 269

“"Of what sublime dignity is the office of the Christian priest who is thus privileged to act as the ambassador and the vicegerent of Christ on earth! He continues the essential ministry of Christ; he teaches the faithful with the authority of Christ, he pardons the penitent sinner with the power of Christ, he offers up again the same sacrifice of adoration and atonement which Christ offered on Calvary. No wonder that the name which spiritual writers are especially found of applying to the priest is that of 'alter Christus.' For the priest is and should be another Christ"- Faith Of Millions: The Credentials of the Catholic Religion, John A. O'Brien PhD (Roman Catholic), page 271

"But as for you and your companions, you certainly sin, if, having heard the decrees of the Apostolic See, and of the universal Church, and the same is confirmed by Holy Writ, you refuse to follow them; for, though your fathers were holy, do you think that their small number, in a corner of the remotest island, is to be preferred before the universal Church of Christ throughout the world? And if that Columba of yours (and, I may say, ours also, if he was Christ's servant), was a holy man and powerful in miracles, yet could he be preferred before the most blessed prince of the Apostles to whom Our Lord said 'Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it, and to thee I will give the keys of the kingdom of heaven'?" When Wilfrid had spoken thus, the king said, "Is it true Colman, that these words were spoken to Peter by Our Lord?" He answered, "It is true, O king!" Then says he, "Can you show any such power given to your Columba?" Colman answered, "None." Then added the king, "Do you both agree that these words were principally directed to Peter, and that the keys of heaven were given to him by Our Lord?" They both answered. "We do." Then the king concluded, "And I also say unto you, that he is the door-keeper, whom I will not contradict, but will, as far as I know and am able, in all things obey his decrees, lest, when I come to the gates of the kingdom of heaven, there should be none to open them, he being my adversary who is proved to have the keys." -The ecclesiastical history of the English people; The greater chronicle; Bede's letter to Egbert, page 25-26

“The third great power of the priestly office and the climax of all is that of consecrating. "No act is greater,” says St. Thomas, "than the consecration of the body of Christ.” In this essential phase of the sacred ministry, the power of the priest is not surpassed by that of the bishop, the archbishop, the cardinal or the pope. Indeed it is equal to that of Jesus Christ, for in this role the priest speaks with the voice and the authority of God Himself”. - The Catholic way of life, page 96. O'Brien, John A. (John Anthony), (A Catholic Revrend)

Quotes declaring POPE INFALLIBLE

If an infallible pope can abdicate for age or ill health, why not for scandal or mismanagement? Why not from a palace coup or popular revolt? Some conservatives were not pleased. Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz, who was private secretary to the late Pope John Paul II, noted that Benedict's predecessor stayed in his job despite great physical suffering. "One doesn't come down from the cross," Dziwisz said." -TheStar.com Monday Feb. 18:2013

Infallibility is exercised when the Roman Pontiff, in virtue of his office as the Supreme Pastor of the Church, or.the College of Bishops, in union with the Pope especially when joined together in an Ecumenical Council, proclaim by a definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals. Infallibility is also exercised when the Pope and Bishops in their ordinary Magisterium are in agreement in proposing a doctrine as definitive. Every one of the faithful must adhere to such teaching with the obedience of faith”. -Compendium : Catechism of the Catholic Church, page 53

"The Roman Pontiff, head of the college of bishops, enjoys this infallibility in virtue of his office, when, as Supreme Pastor and teacher of all the faithful--who confirms his brethren in the faith--he proclaims by a definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals....The infallibility promised to the Church is also present in the body of bishops when, together with Peter's successor, 'they exercise the supreme Magisterium,' above all in an Ecumenical Council. When the Church through its supreme Magisterium proposes a doctrine 'for belief as being divinely revealed,' and as the teaching of Christ, the definitions 'must be adhered to with the obedience of faith.' This infallibility extends as far as the deposit of divine revelation itself." -Catechism of the Catholic Church, #891, page 251, 1994 edition.

Question: When does the Roman Pontiff exercise his prerogative of personal infallibility? (page 103)

“The Roman Pontiff exercises his prerogative of personal infallibility when he speaks ex cathedra—that is, when, in the exercise of his office as Shepherd and Teacher of all Christians, he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole Church”.  - The Catholic Catechism 1932 by Gasparri, Pietro, 1852–1934

Pietro Gasparri, GCTE was a Roman Catholic cardinal, diplomat and politician in the Roman Curia and the signatory of the Lateran Pacts. He served also as Cardinal Secretary of State under Popes Benedict XV and Pope Pius XI. (in other words this was the man who signed the Vatican back into existence as an independent state power)

More of his answers:

(130) What power, then, has the Roman Pontiff over the Church?

By divine right the Roman Pontiff has over the Church a primacy not only of honour but of jurisdiction, and this both in things concerning faith and morals and in discipline and government.

(131) What kind of power has the Roman Pontiff?

The Roman Pontiff has supreme, full, ordinary, and immediate power both over each and every Church, and over each and every Pastor and his flock.

(132) Who are the lawful successors of the Apostles?

The lawful successors of the Apostles are, by divine institution, the Bishops; they are set over particular churches by the Roman Pontiff, and govern them by their own proper power under his authority.

(133) What, then, is the Church founded by Jesus Christ?

The Church founded by Jesus Christ is the visible society of people who are baptized, and who joined together by professing the same faith and by a mutual fellowship strive to attain the same spiritual end under the guiding authority of the Roman Pontiff and of the Bishops in communion with him. The Catholic Catechism 1932 by Gasparri, Pietro, 1852–1934 (page 98 going)

The pope: the vicar of Christ; the head of the church...Third thousand (wikimedia.org) Page 101-104

The great S. Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, "the counsellor of noblemen, bishops, princes and popes," writes, A. D. 1150, to Pope Eugenius III., using many of the titles above cited: 'Who art thou? The High Priest, the Supreme Bishop. Thou art the Prince of Bishops, thou art the Heir of the Apostles. Thou art Abel in Primacy, Noah in government, Abraham in the patriarchal rank, in order Melchisedech, in dignity Aaron, in authority Moses, Samuel in the judicial office, Peter in power, Christ in unction. Thou art he to whom the Keys of Heaven are given, to whom the Sheep are intrusted. There are, indeed, other doorkeepers of Heaven, and other shepherds of the flocks; but thou art the more glorious in proportion as thou hast also, in a different fashion, inherited before others both these names. The former have the flocks assigned to them, each one his own: to thee all are intrusted. One Flock for the One. Not merely for the sheep, but for all the shepherds also thou art the One Shepherd. Whence do I prove this, thou askest? From the word of the Lord. For to whom—I say not among the Bishops, but among the Apostles—have the whole flock been committed in a manner so absolute and undistinguishing ? ' If thou lovest Me, Peter, feed My sheep. ' What sheep ? The inhabitants of this or that city or country, those of a particular kingdom? ' My sheep,' He saith. Who does not see that He designates not some, but all? Nothing is excepted where nothing is distinguished. The power of others is limited by definite bounds; thine extends even over those who have received authority over others. Canst thou not, when a just reason occurs, shut up Heaven against a Bishop, depose him from his episcopal office, and deliver him over to Satan? Thus thy privilege is immutable, as well in the keys committed to thee as in the sheep intrusted to thy care." — {De Considerat. Lib. ii. c. 8, quoted by Hergenrother, Anti-Janus, Eng. trans, p. 100.) (quoted by Ibid. pg 105)

Some additional info on "some" of the names:

  • Pontifix Maximus is a papal title meaning in Latin "chief bridge maker" between earth and heaven. However, Jesus Christ is the only One who can claim this title because "no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6. This was a title of the Roman Caesars and of the Roman Emperors of paganism.
  • Holy Father is a title the pope claims for himself. However, this title occurs only once in the Bible, and used when Jesus addresses His Heavenly Father in John 17:11 in His great prayer before His betrayal, arrest and crucifixion.
  • Father is a title that every Roman Catholic priest claims for himself and expects to be called. Jesus warns in Matthew 23:9 "Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your father which is in heaven." The catholic priest is not regarded in Scripture to be anyone's spiritual father.
  • Monsignor This means "my Lord", and this clearly is a title belonging only to God, the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Reverend is a title of many Roman Catholic priests and Protestant ministers. This is also a title for God in Psalms 111:9 "Holy and Reverend is his name." It is blasphemy for any man to take to himself a title of God.
  • "Mother of God" - Title given to Mary which denotes blasphemy, as it diverts worship to Mary. Mary was the mother of Jesus Christ's humanity, but not the mother of Jesus Christ's divinity.

Popes & Priests declare they can forgive the sins of men

"Were the Redeemer to descend into a church, and sit in a confessional to administer the sacrament of penance, and a priest to sit in a confessional, Jesus would say over each penitent, 'ego te absolvo", the priest would likewise say over each of his penitents, 'ego te absolvo', and the penitents of each would be equally absolved." - Dignity and duties of the priest; or, Selva. A collection of materials for ecclesiastical retreats. Rules of life and spiritual rules by Liguori, Alfonso Maria de', Saint (Roman Catholic), page 34

"The priest does not only declare that the sinner is forgiven, but he really forgives him...so great is the power of the priest, that the judgments of heaven itself are subject to his decision." -The Catholic Priest, by Michael Meuller, Kreuzer Bros., 1876., page 79

“And on the other hand, it is being undermined by the sometimes widespread idea that one can obtain forgiveness directly from God, even in a habitual way, without approaching the sacrament of reconciliation. A further negative influence is the routine of a sacramental practice sometimes lacking in fervor and real spontaneity, deriving perhaps from a mistaken and distorted idea of the effects of the sacrament.

It would therefore be foolish, as well as presumptuous, to wish arbitrarily to disregard the means of grace and salvation which the Lord has provided and, in the specific case, to claim to receive forgiveness while doing without the sacrament [going to confessional] which was instituted by Christ precisely for forgiveness.

God is always the one who is principally offended by sin-"Tibi soli peccavi!"-and God alone can forgive. Hence the absolution that the priest, the minister of forgiveness, though himself a sinner, grants to the penitent is the effective sign of the intervention of the Father in every absolution and the sign of the "resurrection" from "spiritual death" which is renewed each time that the sacrament of penance is administered”.- RECONCILIATION AND PENANCE OF JOHN PAUL II

"This judicial authority will even include the power to forgive sin." -The Catholic Encyclopaedia Vol xii, article 'Pope' pg 265

"the poor sinner kneels at his confessor's feet. He KNOWS he is not speaking to an ordinary man but to 'ANOTHER CHRIST,' He hears the words: 'I absolve thy sins..." and the HIDEOUS LOAD OF SINS DROPS FROM HIS SOUL FOREVER." -William Doyle "Shall I be a priest" pg 14-15

Vatican declares its murderous hatred for Bible believers

Luke 3:14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

Thousands of heretics" or Waldenses, "old men, women and children, were hung, quartered, broken upon the wheel, or burned alive and their property confiscated for the benefit of the king, and Holy See."- page 416, The Papacy and the Civil Power, Thompson

“Then without the decree of the Fourth Lateran Council, he prescrived exterminations as the remedy against the heresy of the waldenses and Albigenses, and, consequently, against all heresy. Thus this method of persecution became a part of the canon law, and therefore a part of the doctrine of the Church, by his [pope Innocent III ] infallible act alone”. -Ibid 492

March 12, 2000, Pope John Paul II ADMITTED the Roman Catholic Church KILLED the believers and does NOT know the Father or Jesus. To deny that, is to deny the very words of Jesus Christ. See proof here... -Pope and Forgiveness?-

"For professing faith contrary to the teachings of the Church of Rome, history records the martyrdom of more then one hundred million peopleA million Waldenses and Albigenses [Swiss and French Protestants] perished during a crusade proclaimed by Pope Innocent III in 1208. Beginning from the establishment of the Jesuits in 1540 to 1580, nine hundred thousand were destroyedOne hundred and fifty thousand perished by the Inquisition in thirty years. Within the space of thirty-eight years after the edict of Charles V against the Protestants, fifty thousand persons were hanged, beheaded, or burned alive for heresyEighteen thousand more perished during the administration of the Duke of Alva in five and a half years."--Brief Bible Readings, p. 16. (Adventist source will likely be rejected by Catholics)

"That the Church of Rome has shed more innocent blood than any other institution that has ever existed among mankind, will be questioned by no Protestant who has a competent knowledge of history . . . It is impossible to form a complete conception of the multitude of her victims, and it is quite certain that no  powers of imagination can adequately realize their sufferings."--W. E. H. Lecky, History of the Rise and Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe, vol. 2, p. 40, 1910 edition.

(An excellent though lengthy article describing in detail the right of the Roman Catholic Church to do this, will be found in The Catholic Encyclopedia, vol. 12, p. 266.)

"You ask if he (the Roman Catholic) were lord in the land, and you were in a minority, if not in numbers yet in power, what would he do to you? That, we say, would entirely depend upon circumstances. If it would benefit the cause of Catholicism, he would tolerate you: If expedient, he would imprison you, banish you, fine you; possibly, he might even hang you. But be assured of one thing: He would never tolerate you for the sake of 'the glorious principles of civil and religious liberty' . . . Catholicism is the most intolerant of creeds. It is intolerance itself, for it is truth itself."--"Civil and Religious Liberty," in The Rambler, 8, Sept, 1851, pp. 174, 178.  "From the birth of popery in 606, to the present time, it is estimated by careful and credible historians, that more than fifty millions of the human family, have been slaughtered for the crime of heresy by popish persecutors,--an average of more than 40,000 religious murders for every year of the existence of popery to the present day. Of course the average number of victims yearly, was vastly greater, during those gloomy ages when popery was in her glory and reigned despot of the world; and it has been much less since the power of the popes has diminished to tyrannize over the nations, and to compel the princes of the earth, by the terrors of excommunication, interdiction, and deposition, to butcher their heretical subjects."--John Dowling, The History of Romanism, pp. 541-542. ( John Dowling highlights 606 AD because of BONIFACE III receiving the title UNIVERSAL BISHOP, author doesn’t believe the first pope was in 606 AD as shown on page 649)

“The Church never persecutes. This proposition is tenable and true in the strict scientific sense of the words. But it must be freely confessed, and we do confess accordingly, that in the popular and common English sense of the words the Catholic Church has persecuted, and still claims the right to persecute”. -Publications of the Catholic Truth Society, 1898, page 142

Catholic Priests claim power over God Himself

"...we find in obedience to the words of his priests - Hoc est Corpus Meum - God Himself descends on the altar, that he comes whenever they call Him; and as often as they call Him, and places Himself in their hands, even though they should be His enemies. And after having come, he remains, entirely at their disposal; they move Him as they please, from one place to another; they may, if they wish, shut Him up in the tabernacle, expose Him on the altar, or carry Him outside the church; they may, if they choose, eat His flesh, and give Him for the food of others. ;Oh how great is their power!' -The Dignity of the priesthood by Liguori page 26-27

"...the power of the priest is the power of the divine person; for the transubstantiation of the bread requires as much power as the creation of the world. ...thus the priest may be called the creator of the Creator..." -ibid page 33

"...the priesthood is the most sublime of al created dignities:... an infinite dignity ...an astounding miracle, great, immense, and infinite...exalted...above all celestial heights..." – ibid page 23

“Priests and deacons must remember that the service of the table of the Bread of the Lord imposes on them special obligations which refer in the first place to Christ Himself present in the Eucharist and secondly to all who actually participate in the Eucharist or who might do so”.

The priest offers the holy Sacrifice in persona Christi; this means more than offering "in the name of' or "in place of' Christ. In persona means in specific sacramental identification with "the eternal High Priest"--Karol Wojtyla, aka pope John Paul II DOMINICAE CENAE ON THE MYSTERY AND WORSHIP OF THE EUCHARIST February 24, 1980

"I explained that I wanted to give them [Yemen government] sisters, but the trouble was that, without a priest, without Jesus going with them, our sisters couldn't go anywhere... I was so struck with the thought that ONLY when the priest is there can we have altar and our tabernacle and OUR JESUS. Only the priest can PUT Jesus there for us...Jesus wants to go there, but we cannot bring him unless you first give him to us." – Mother Theresa quoted by the book: "Be holy!" : God's first call to priests today, page 109

"you [priests] are called 'another Christ. " – Mother Theresa quoted by ibid page 112

priests have MORE POWER than God Himself

" Power of Consecrating: The supreme power of the priestly office is the power of consecrating. 'No act is greater,' says St. Thomas, 'than the consecration of the body of Christ.' In this essential phase of the sacred ministry, the power of the priest is not surpassed by that of the bishop, the archbishop, the cardinal or the pope. Indeed it is equal to that of Jesus Christ. For in this role the priest speaks with the voice and the authority of God Himself. When the priest pronounces the tremendous works of Consecration, he reaches up into heavens, brings Christ down from His throne, and places Him upon our altar to be offered up again as the victim for the sins of man.

"It is a power greater than that of monarchs and emperors: it is greater than that of saints and angels, greater than that of Seraphim and Cherubim. Indeed it is greater even than the power of the Virgin Mary. For, while the Blessed Virgin was the human agency by which Christ became incarnate a single time, the priest brings Christ down from heaven, and renders Him present on our altar as the eternal Victim for the sins of man - not once but a thousand times! The priest speaks and lo! Christ the Eternal and Omnipotent God, bows His head in humble obedience to the priest's command”. - (Faith of Millions, John O'Brien, Ph.D., LL.D., Pg 270, "nihil obstat" by Rev. T. E. Dillon-Censor Librorum and "imprimatur" by John Francis Noll, D.D. -Bishop of Fort Wayne).

“The priest says: Hoc est corpus meum, even he has to say it for the validity of the consecration. Meum! But it is not he who says these words; his voice indeed we hear, but he is only the instrument of the Sovereign Priest: Our Lord speaks through his minister. The glory of this minister consists precisely in disappearing, in allowing Jesus to act through his personality: Sacerdos alter Christus.

This Christ now immolated by the hands of the priest is the same Christ who is in Heaven. Same happiness, same power, same majesty. He is performing the same acts, offering the same adorations, the same thanksgiving, the same prayers. He the object of the beatitude of the elect is now in the hands of the priest: Agnoscite quod agitis”.

But if really the priest causes our Lord to be present on the altar, if he offers Him, whilst Jesus is now in heaven, have we not to conclude that it is from the very bosom of the Father that the priest draws this divine Victim?” -Agnoscite quod agitis". (Our Priesthood, Rev.Joseph Bruneau, S.D.D., page 137, "nihil obstat" by M.F. Dinneen, S.S.,D.D. -Censor deputatus, "imprimatur" by James Cardinal Gibbons -Archbishop of Baltimore, "Re-Imprimatur" by Michael J. Curley -Archbishop of Baltimore).

"The Consecration and Transubstantiation: The last time we left off, we were reflecting upon our participation in the "Communion of Saints" at mass. All who believe in Christ as Savior and Lord are united to Him and to each other. We pray that our unity may be complete. Christ holds His faithful to Himself in this world (The Church Militant). He holds to Himself the souls in purgatory (The Church Suffering) and He holds most closely and intimately those already in Heaven (The Church Triumphant). As we approach the moment when bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ (which is called the Consecration) the Communion of Saints is realized. Where Christ is present, there are His saints in glory, the holy souls in purgatory and all of us struggling in this world. As I have said before the mass transcends space and time. Peri Lamy, a French priest and visionary who lived up until the 1930's, would have conversations not only with our Lord and Lady, but also with saints and angels during mass. What was open to His eyes visibly is open to our eyes in faith." By Rev. Richard M. Mileshttp://www.miraclerosarymission.org/mi94oct.htm

Vatican declares power over all governments

"Within the twenty years this country is going to rule the world. Kings and Emperors will soon pass away and the democracy of the United States will take their place. When the United States rules the world, the Catholic Church will rule the world.Nothing can stand against the Church. I'd like to see the politicians who would try to rule against the Church in Chicago. His reign would be short indeed" Roman Catholic Archbishop James E. Quigley (October 15, 1854 - July 10, 1915). Chicago Daily Tribune, May 5, 1903. (paywall)

"If the liberties of the American people are ever destroyed, they will fall by the hand of the Roman Catholic cult's clergy."  -General Lafayette under President George Washington (widely quoted)

"There is, ere long, to be a state religion in this country, and that state religion is to be the Roman Catholic."

1st. The Roman Catholic is to wield his vote for the purpose of securing Catholic ascendancy in this country.

2nd. All legislation must be governed by the will of God, unerringly indicated by the pope.

3rd. EDUCATION must be controlled by Catholic Authorities, and under education the opinions of the individual and the utterances of the press are included, and many opinions are to be forbidden by the secular arm, under the authority of the Church, even to war and bloodshed." (Father Hecker, Catholic World, July 1870.)

"Undoubtedly it is the intention of the pope to possess this country. In this intention he is aided by the Jesuits, and all the Catholic prelates and priests." (Brownson's Review, May 1864)

"See, sir, from this Chamber, I govern, not only to Paris, but to China; not only to China, but to all the world, without anyone knowing how I do it." -Tamburini, 14th General of the Jesuits. Quoted by Chiniquy (widely quoted)

"Harmony between the different social classes must be re-established; peace must reign on earth. This is the task I intend to perform for you; this is the duty I promise to fulfil that all may once again be subject to the dominion of God, Jesus Christ and His Vicar on earth." - Saint Pius X, The New Italian Life Of The Saint, by Fr. Hieronymo Dal-Gal, translated and adapted by Rev. Thomas F. Murray, M.A., fourth revised impression, published by M. H. Gill and Son Ltd., 50 Upper O'Connell Street, 1954, pg. 104.

Speaking of the time, about 500 A.D., when the Roman Empire was crumbling to pieces:] "No, the [Catholic] Church will not descend into the tomb. It will survive the Empire . . . At length a second empire will arise, and of this empire the Pope will be the master--more then this, he will be the master of Europe. He will dictate his orders to kings who will obey them"--Andrea Lagarde, The Latin Church in the Middle Ages, 1915, p. vi.

"Fear, then, our wrath and the thunders of our vengeance; for Jesus Christ has appointed us [the popes] with his own mouth absolute judges of all men; and kings themselves are submitted to our authority." Pope Nicholas I (858-867 AD) quoted by Louis Marie de la Haye, Vicomte de Cormeni (A French jurist and auditor appointed by Napoleon I) in his book The public and private history of the popes of Rome etc. page 244

“Paul IV. (Caraffa) before his election was a warm friend of Church reformation, and left the Papal Court because there was no hope of obtaining any help to wards it under Clement VIII. When he became Pope himself nothing was to be seen of his former zeal for reforming the Church. At a time when almost every post brought fresh news of the advance of Protestantism, he left the Church in its helpless condition; lie did not so much as think of continuing the Council which had for some years been suspended. His chief concerns were the advancement and enrichment of his nephews; his favourite institution, the Inquisition; and the quarrel with the two only champions the Papal system then had, Charles v. and Philip II, for it is the office of the Papacy to tread under foot kings and emperors”. J.H. Ignaz Dollinger, in The Pope and the Council, (London), page 418 (Dollinger was a Catholic priest)

"[It is error to believe that] The Church ought to be separated from the State, and the State from the Church." Pope Pius IX, The Syllabus (of Errors), Issued in 1864, Section VI, Errors About Civil Society, Considered Both in Itself and in its Relation to the Church, #55.

“Many American Catholic leaders nevertheless retained essentially conservative political views. Orestes Brownson, a distinguished New England convert to Catholicism, wrote, ‘Democracy is a mischievous dream where the Catholic Church does not predominate to inspire the people with reverence and to teach and accustom them to obedience to authority’”. -Brownson's Review quoted by Reichley, James page 174

“There is one, and one only, sure Democracy — the Catholicism of the Popes that recognises the rights of all without distinction, the rights of every individual soul”. -Creative revolution by John Francis Theodore Prince, page 16 (Author rightly says prostitution is wrong then uses that to say the popes recognise the rights of all?)

The old Protestant culture is about at the end of its rope... Why can't we make the U.S. Catholic in legislation, Catholic in justice, aims and ideals?" -Father F. X. Talbot, editor of America, official Jesuit magazine for the U.S. statement in New York Globe Dec. 14, 1930 quoted by Converted Catholic Magazine

"Religious liberty is merely endured until the opposite can be carried into effect without peril to the Catholic Church." -Bishop O'Conner of Pittsburgh.

“If the Catholics ever gain, which they surely will do, though at a distant day, an immense numerical superiority, religious freedom in this country is at an endSo say our enemies. So we believe. But in which sense do we believe it? In what sense are we the advocates of religious intolerance? In the sense in which the enemies of the Church understand the word? By no means.  We simply mean, that a Christian people will not consider the ridicule of Christianity, the denial of its fundamental truths, of the immortality of and the existence of God; the overthrow of all morality, matters beneath their notice and condemnation ; that the foundation will be laid for a legislation which shall restrain the propagation of certain doctrines; that men will no longer be permitted to attack dogmas with which morality : is inseparably connected; that the State will take its, proper position as ancillary to the Church. It is useless to disguise this fact; every man’s reason will tell him that it is true, and every Catholic will feel that he wishes that time were come, even whilst he wastes his breath in empty praise of liberty of speech”. -The Shephard of the Valley, journal of the late bishop of St. Louis. Shepherd of the Valley, Volume 2, Number 7, 22 November 1851 (2nd page, 3rd column from the left, right at the top)

"But Constitutions can be changed, and non-Catholic sects may decline to such a point that the political proscription [ban] of them may become feasible and expedientWhat protection would they have against a Catholic state?" -The State and the Church, pp.38,39, by Miller and Ryan, imprimatur of Cardinal Hayes.

The Catholic Church in this nation must live on to accomplish her work, even though our Republican form of government disappears." -The Catholic World, April, 1935, p.12.

1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. 15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men

To wish the Church to be subject to the civil power in the exercise of her duty is a great folly and a sheer injustice. Whenever this is the case, order is disturbed, for things natural are put above things supernatural; the many benefits which the Church, if free to act, would confer on society are either prevented or at least lessened in number; and a way is prepared for enmities and contentions between the two powers, with how evil result to both the issue of events has taught us only too frequently”. -ENCYCLICAL OF POPE LEO XIII ON THE CHRISTIAN CONSTITUTION OF STATES, 1 November, 1885

Under the influence of Germanic customs and concepts, torture was little used from the 9th to the 12th centuries, but with the revival of Roman law the practice was reestablished in the 12th century... In 1252 (Pope) Innocent IV sanctioned the infliction of torture by the civil authorities upon heretics, and torture came to have a recognized place in the procedure of the inquisitional courts-New Catholic Encyclopedia, arts. HOLY OFFICE STILL EXISTS (under a new name)

Pope John Paul II Revives Inquisition

The Encyclical of Pope Pius X, issued in 1864, asserted:

  • the right to require the State not to leave any man free to profess his own religion;
  • the right to employ force;
  • the right to claim dominion in temporal things;
  • the right to have the entire control of public schools;
  • the right to hold princes and kings in subjection;
  • the right to treat all marriages as invalid which are not solemnized according to the forms of the Council of Trent;
  • the right to prevent the State granting to immigrants the public exercise of their own worship;
  • the right to require the State not to permit free expression of opinion

Vatican claims power over all churches

“It is  neither  more  nor  less  than  a  falsehood.  No man  has  a  right  to  choose  his  religion.  None  hut  an atheist  can  uphold  the  principles  of  religious  liberty”. (New York Freeman, official journal of Bishop Hughes, Jan 26, 1852) quoted by Sinclair George

"The Church...does not, and cannot accept, or in any degree favor, liberty in the Protestant sense of liberty." (Catholic World, April 1870)

"Religious liberty is merely endured until the opposite can be carried into effect without peril to the Catholic Church." (Rt. Rev. O'Connor, Bishop of Pittsburgh.)

"Protestantism has not, and never can have, any right where Catholicity has triumphed." (Catholic Review, June 1875) quoted by the paper in the previous link

"It no longer can be said today that the U.S. is a Protestant country…The Catholic Church is forging ahead, growing day by day and becoming stronger." -Cardinal Strich of Chicago, quoted in Time Magazine, Aug. 5, 1955

"It is error to believe that Every man is free to embrace and profess that religion which, guided by the light of reason, he shall consider true." Pope Pius IX, The Syllabus (of Errors), Issued in 1864, Section III,  Indifferentism, Latitudinarianism, #15.

"It is error to believe that hence it has been wisely decided by law, in some Catholic countries, that persons coming to reside therein shall enjoy the public exercise of their own peculiar worship." Pope Pius IX, The Syllabus (of Errors), Issued in 1864, Section X, Errors Having Reference to Modern Liberalism, #78. (same link as above)

"It is error to believe that Moreover, it is false that the civil liberty of every form of worship, and the full power, given to all, of overtly and publicly manifesting any opinions whatsoever and thoughts, conduce more easily to corrupt the morals and minds of the people, and to propagate the pest of indifferentism." Pope Pius IX, The Syllabus (of Errors), Issued in 1864, Section X, Errors Having Reference to Modern Liberalism, #79. (same link as above)

"This shameful font of indifferentism gives rise to that absurd and erroneous proposition which claims that liberty of conscience must be maintained for everyone. It spreads ruin in sacred and civil affairs, though some repeat over and over again with the greatest impudence that some advantage accrues to religion from it....a pestilence more deadly to the state than any other. Experience shows, even from earliest times, that cities renowned for wealth, dominion, and glory perished as a result of this single evil, namely immoderate freedom of opinion, license of free speech, and desire for novelty.

Here We must include that harmful and never sufficiently denounced freedom to publish any writings whatever and disseminate them to the people, which some dare to demand and promote with so great a clamor. We are horrified to see what monstrous doctrines and prodigious errors are disseminated far and wide in countless books, pamphlets, and other writings which, though small in weight, are very great in malice." Pope Gregory XVI, Mirari Vos (On Liberalism and Religious Indifferentism), Encyclical promulgated on August 15, 1832, #14 & 15.

Vatican admits connection with CAESAR:

"Out of the ruins of political Rome, arose the great moral Empire in the 'giant form' of the Roman Church."--A.C. Flick, The Rise of the Mediaeval Church, 1909, p. 150.

"Under the Roman Empire the popes had no temporal powers. But when the Roman Empire had disintegrated and its place had been taken by a number of rude, barbarous kingdoms, the Roman Catholic church not only became independent of the states in religious affairs, but dominated secular affairs as well. At times, under such rulers as Charlemagne (768-814), Otto the Great (936-973), and Henry III (1039-1056), the civil power controlled the church to some extent; but in general, under the weak political system of feudalism, the well-organized, unified, and centralized church, with the pope at its head, was not only independent in ecclesiastical affairs but also controlled civil affairs"--Carl Conrad Eckhardt, The Papacy and World-Affairs, The University of Chicago Press, 1937, P. 1. Speaking of the time, about 500 A.D., when the Roman Empire was crumbling to pieces:] "No, the [Catholic] Church will not descend into the tomb. It will survive the Empire . . . Vatican claims power to change God's Law

Latin (from what can be seen): papa tante est auctoritasis et potestatis, possit quoqe leges Divinas modificare declarar, vel interpretari …Papa Jus Divinum potest modificare , cum ejus potestat non sit ex homine sed ex Deo & in terris Dei vices fungitur cum amplissima potestate oues suas ligandi

The Pope is of great authority and power that he can modify, explain, or interpret even divine laws... The Pope can modify divine law, since his power is not of man, but of God, and he acts as vicegerent of God upon earth." -Lucius Ferraris, Prompta Ribliotheca, "Papa," art. 2, translated. (Number 30)

“Question: Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept ?

Had she not such power, she could not have done that in which all modern religionists agree with her; --she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday the seventh day, a change for which there is no Scriptural authority." -Rev. Stephan Keenan, A Doctrinal Catechism, "On the Obedience Due to the Church," chap. 2, p. 174. (Imprimatur, John Cardinal McCloskey, archbishop of New York.)

They are asked, how can you prove you have the power to institute festivals. They reply, everyone agrees with us when we do it…

"Is not every Christian obliged to sanctify Sunday and to abstain on that day from unnecessary servile work? Is not the observance of this law among the most prominent of our sacred duties? But you may read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and you will not find a single line authorizing the sanctification of Sunday. The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturdaya day which we never sanctify." -James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of Our Fathers pp. 99

"The Catholic church," declared Cardinal Gibbons, "by virtue of her divine mission changed the day from Saturday to Sunday." Catholic Mirror Sept. 23 1983. (Official organ of Cardinal Gibbons)

“Question - Which is the Sabbath day?

Answer - Saturday is the Sabbath day.

Question - Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?

Answer - We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church, in the Council of Laodicea (A.D. 364), transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday." The Convert's Catechism of Catholic Doctrine, p. 50, 3rd ed.

"There is no word, no hint in the New Testament about abstaining from work on Sunday. The observance of Ash Wednesday, or Lent, stands exactly on the same footing as the observance of Sunday. Into the rest of Sunday no divine law entered"--Canon Eyton, The Ten Commandments [Presbyterian].

"The Adventists are the only body of Christians with the Bible as their teacher, who could find no warrant in its pages for the change of day from the seventh to the first. Hence their appellation," Seventh-day Adventists. "They're cardinal principle consists in setting apart Saturday for the exclusive worship of God, in conformity with the positive command of God Himself, repeatedly reiterated in the sacred books of the Old and New testaments, literally kept by the children of Israel for thousands of years to this day, and endorsed by the teaching and practice of the Son of God while on earth." -Rome's Challenge, page two

"Is not yet too late for Protestants to redeem themselves. Will they do it?... will they indeed take the written word only, the Scripture alone, as their sole authority and their sole standard? Or will they still hold the indefensible, self contradictory, and suicidal doctrine and practice of following the authority of the Catholic church and wear the SIGN of her authority? Will they keep the Sabbath of the Lord, the seventh day, according to Scripture? Or will they keep the Sunday according to the tradition of the Catholic church-Ibid, page 31

The Sabbath, the most glorious day in the law, has been changed into the Lord's day. (...) These and other similar matters have not ceased by virtue of Christ's teaching (for He says He has come to fulfill the law, not to destroy it), but they have been changed by the authority of the church.» (Archbishop Gaspare de Fosso, Sacrorum Conciliorum nova amplissima Collectio, 1902, vol. 33, pp. 529,530.)

"Protestantism, in discarding the authority of the [Roman Catholic] Church, has no good reason for its Sunday theory, and ought logically to keep Saturday as the Sabbath."-John Gilmary Shea, in the American Catholic Quarterly Review, January 1883.

"God simply gave His [Catholic] Church the power to set aside whatever day or days she would deem suitable as Holy Days. The Church chose Sunday, the first day of the week, and in the course of time added other days, as holy days."-Vincent J. Kelly, Forbidden Sunday and Feast-Day Occupations, p. 2. (paywall)

"We Catholics, then, have precisely the same authority for keeping Sunday holy instead of Saturday as we have for every other article of our creed, namely, the authority of the Church . . whereas you who are Protestants have really no authority for it whatever; for there is no authority for it [Sunday sacredness] in the Bible, and you will not allow that there can be authority for it anywhere else."-The Brotherhood of St. Paul, "The Clifton tracts," Volume 4, tract 4, p. 15.

Vatican pushes for Sunday Laws

Pope Benedict XVI states:

He also states:

  • Sunday was created because the Lord was raised and entered the community of the Apostles to be with them. And thus, they also understood that Saturday was no longer the liturgical day, but Sunday, on which the Lord wants to be with us physically again and again, and wants to nourish us with his Body, so that we ourselves may become his Body in the world.
  • It is precisely this essence of faith [Sunday sacredness] that liberates us from egoistic isolation and unites us in a great community, a very complete one - in parishes, in the Sunday gathering -, a universal community in which I become related to everyone in the world.

(Meeting with Diocesan Clergy of Aosta, Address of Pope Benedict XVI, Parish Church at Introd (Aosta Valley), Monday, July 25, 2005.)

Pope Benedict XVI:

“If the Church tells us that the Eucharist is an essential part of Sunday, this is no mere positivism or thirst for power. On Easter morning, first the women and then the disciples had the grace of seeing the Lord. From that moment on, they knew that the first day of the week, Sunday, would be his day, the day of Christ the Lord. The day when creation began became the day when creation was renewed. Creation and redemption belong together. That is why Sunday is so important. It is good that today, in many cultures, Sunday is a free day, and is often combined with Saturday so as to constitute a "week-end" of free time. Yet this free time is empty if God is not present”. (Mass on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Homily of Pope Benedict XVI, given in Parish Church of Castel Gandolfo, Monday, August 15, 2005.)

“the disturbing spread of social disorder, war, injustice and violence in our world can ultimately be countered only by renewed appreciation and respect for the universal moral law whose principles derive from the Creator himself”. [They believe Sunday sacredness is part of God’s moral law so they see Sunday as a solution to all these problems in the world.] (Address of Pope Benedict XVI to H.E. Mr Francis Rooney, New Ambassador of the United States of America to the Holy See, Saturday, November 12, 2005.)

“without forgetting that the biblical teaching on work culminates in the commandment to rest. To require, therefore, that Sunday should not be equated to all other days of the week is a civilized decision”.  (Address of Pope Benedict XVI to the Italian Christian Workers' Associations (A.C.L.I.), Clementine Hall, Friday, January 27, 2006.)

“May the "Day of the Lord" that could well be called "the lord of days" regain all its importance and be perceived and lived to the full in the celebration of the Eucharist, from which the Christian community grows authentically and on which it depends”. To regain its importance, it would need to be mandated as it was in the past. That’s the standard they hold Sunday to. (Letter of Pope Benedict XVI to Card. Francis Arinze on the Occasion of the Study Day in Honour of the 43rd Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, From the Vatican, November 27, 2006.)

Pope Benedict XVI:

  • “Living the Sunday obligation [73]”
  • the Synod Fathers reaffirmed the importance of the Sunday obligation for all the faithful,
  • To lose a sense of Sunday as the Lord's Day, a day to be sanctified, is symptomatic of the loss of an authentic sense of Christian freedom, the freedom of the children of God. (206) Here some observations made by my venerable predecessor John Paul II in his Apostolic Letter Dies Domini (207) continue to have great value. [Dies Domini says Christians will seek to ensure that Sunday is legislated, when really they are pushing for that]

Sacramentum Caritatis: Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation on the Eucharist as the Source and Summit of the Church's Life and Mission, Given by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome, at Saint Peter's, February 22, 2007, the Feast of the Chair of Peter

“In order to fulfil this mission it is necessary to remain united to Christ through prayer and a deep sacramental life, and for this purpose, to hold Sunday in special high regard, for it is the day dedicated to the Lord”. (Message of Pope Benedict XVI to the Participants in the 9th International Youth Forum (Rocca di Papa, 28-31 March 2007), from the Vatican, March 28, 2007.)

“In order to form the disciple and sustain the missionary in his great task … Every Sunday and every Eucharist is a personal encounter with Christ”. (Apostolic Journey of Pope Benedict XVI to Brazil on the Occasion of the Fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, Inaugural Session, Address of Pope Benedict XVI, Conference Hall, Shrine of Aparecida, Sunday, May 13, 2007.)

“Sine dominico non possumus!” Without the gift of the Lord, without the Lord’s day [Sunday], we cannot live. [Although quoting Abitene all Popes believe this] (Eucharistic Celebration Homily of Pope Benedict XVI , Saint Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, Sunday, September 9, 2007.)

“I am confident that your country [America], established on the self-evident truth that the Creator has endowed each human being with certain inalienable rights, will continue to find in the principles of the common moral law[Sunday sacredness], enshrined in its founding documents, a sure guide for exercising its leadership within the international community”. (Address of Pope Benedict XVI  to H.E. Mrs. Mary Ann Glendon, New Ambassador of the United States of America to the Holy See, Friday, February 29, 2008). Context: America used to have “blue laws” – “blue law, in U.S. history, a law forbidding certain secular activities on Sunday. The name may derive from Samuel A. Peters's General History of Connecticut (1781), which purported to list the stiff Sabbath regulations at New Haven, Connecticut; the work was printed on blue paper”. - Britannica

“Indeed, the world has greater need of hope than ever: hope for peace, for justice, and for freedom, but this hope can never be fulfilled without obedience to the law of God [Sunday Sacredness]”. Whilst this is true in principle, their problem is they have the wrong law, they have man’s law, whilst Jesus won’t impose his law upon those who don’t wish to follow, the Catholic Church will. (Video-Message of the Pope Benedict XVI  to Catholics and People of the United States of America on the Occasion of the Upcoming Apostolic Journey,  April 15-21, 2008).

Pope Benedict XVI:

The RCC "makes its contribution (in the ethical and moral sphere) according to the dispositions of international law, helps to define that law, and makes appeal to it",

" That is why the Church is happy to be associated with the activity of this distinguished Organization, charged with the responsibility of promoting peace and good will throughout the earth”. (Apostolic Journey to the United States of America and Visit to the United Nations Organization Headquarters, Meeting with the Members of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization, Address of Pope Benedict XVI, New York, Friday, April 18, 2008.)

Sunday must return to being the day of the Lord, of adoration and glorification of God, of the Holy Sacrifice, of prayer, of rest, of recollection and reflection, of the happy reunion in the intimacy of the family. A painful experience has taught that for not a few even among those same, who throughout the week work honestly and assiduously, Sunday has become the day of sin”. ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS PIUS XII

"Every man and woman shall repair in the morning to the divine service and sermons preached upon the Sabbath (Sunday), and in the afternoon to divine service, and catechizing, upon pain for the first fault to lose their provision and the allowance for the whole week following; for the second, to lose the said allowance and also be whipped; and for the third to suffer death."!!! Laws, and Orders, Divine, Politique, & Martial For the Colony in Virginia: first established by Sir Thomas Gates, Knight, Lieutenant - General, the 24th of May, 1610

Vatican seeks to abolish separation of Church & State

Recent statements by the Polish Episcopate have fueled apprehension. In late April the bishops urged that the new constitution exclude any provision for the separation of church and state. Vatican openly admits it embraces Babylon (Paganism)

"It is interesting to note how often our Church has availed herself of practices which were in common use among pagans...Thus it is true, in a certain sense, that some Catholic rites and ceremonies are a reproduction of those of pagan creeds...." (The Externals of the Catholic Church, Her Government, Ceremonies, Festivals, Sacramentals and Devotions, by John F. Sullivan, p 156, published by P.J. Kennedy, NY, 1942)

The retention of the old pagan name of Dies Solis, for Sunday is, in a great measure, owing to the union of pagan and Christian sentiment with which the first day of the week was recommended by Constantine to his subjects - pagan and Christian alike - as the 'venerable' day of the sun." -Arthur P. Stanley, History of the Eastern Church, p. 184

"It has often been charged... that Catholicism is overlaid with many pagan incrustations. Catholicism is ready to accept that accusation - and even to make it her boast... the great god Pan is not really dead, he is baptized" -The Story of American Catholicism p 37

Cardinal Newman admits in his book that; the "The use of temples, and these dedicated to particular saints, and ornamented on occasions with branches of trees; incense, lamps, and candles; votive offerings on recovery from illness; holy water; asylums; holydays and seasons, use of calendars, processions, blessings on the fields; sacerdotal vestments, the tonsure, the ring in marriage, turning to the East, images at a later date, perhaps the ecclesiastical chant, and the Kyrie Eleison, are all of pagan origin, and sanctified by their adoption into the Church. {374}" -An Essay on The Development of the Christian Doctrine John Henry "Cardinal Newman" p.359

"In order to attach to Christianity great attraction in the eyes of the nobility, the priests adopted the outer garments and adornments which were used in pagan cults." -Life of Constantine, Eusabius, cited in Altai-Nimalaya, p. 94

Vatican declares its hatred for the Word of God

Thomas Moore tortured and killed many people in London. Their crime? They owned a Bible in English. Worse yet, the Vatican made him a Saint in the last century. And then in the year 2000 Pope John Paul II made him the patron Saint of politicians.

"The belief in the Bible as the sole source of faith is unhistorical, illogical, fatal to the virtue of faith, and destructive of unity." -The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume XIII, "Protestantism", Section III A - Sola Scriptura ("Bible Alone"), Nihil Obstat, February 1, 1912 by Remy Lafort, D.D., Censor, Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York.

“Unfortunately many of these books were lost during the persecution of the 17th century, and only those books and ancient documents sent to the libraries of Cambridge and Geneva by Pastor Leger were preserved. The Papists took care, after every persecution, to destroy as much of the Waldensean literature as possible. Many of the Barbes were learned men and well versed in the languages and science of the Scriptures. A knowledge of the Bible was the distinctive feature of the ancient, and now the modern Vaudois. Deprived for centuries of a visible church and forced to worship in caves and dens, this intimate knowledge of God's word was their only light. Their school was in the almost inaccessible solitude of the deep mountain gorge called 'Pra Del Tor', and their studies were severe and long-continued, embracing the Latin, Romaunt and Italian languages."-Bompiani - A Short History of the Italian Waldenses

heir refusal to surrender the scriptures was an offense that the Papacy could not tolerateThe Papacy was determined to exterminate the heretics from the face of the Earth. The heretics greatest offense, was that they refused to worship God according to the will of the Pope. For this crime, the heretics suffered every humiliation, insult and torture that man could event: ( Fox's Book Of Martyrs Note: Catholics regard Fox’s book of Martyrs as fiction even though all of those persecutions can be accounted for by multiple sources)

(Rev.) Dr. Cahill declared that "he would rather the Catholic should read the worst books of immorality than the Protestant Bible-that forgery of God's Word, that slander of Christ." - (Roman Catholic Tablet, December 17, 1853, p. 804).

“Why we Catholics, of all Christians, should expose our Church to such terrible and needless risks, merely in order to compel men to believe that the bible we so seldom open is absolutely free from error is one of those profound mysteries which it is hopeless to try to solve; for we can never convince outsiders of the truth of our assertion, and for them alone is it a matter of real importance”. Contemporary Review April, 1894, p. 577.

"Do you allow your flock to read the Bible at all?" said a writer in the Contemporary Review to a friend of his, a parish priest. "No, sir, I do not; you forget that I am a physician, not a poisoner of souls." -Contemporary Review April, 1894, p. 578.

VATICAN ADMITS SUNDAY IS THEIR MARK!

"Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change (Saturday Sabbath to Sunday) was her act... And the act is a MARK of her ecclesiastical authority in religious things."

In response to the letter of J.F. Snyder of Bloomington, Illinois by H.F. Thomas, Chancellor of Cardinal Gibbons. Nov. 11, 1895 (or October 28, 1895)

Other source quoting this quote:

"Cardinal Gibbons says, speaking of the change of the day of rest from Saturday to Sunday: "Of course the Catholic church claims that the change was her act [...] and the act is a MARK of her ecclesiastical power and authority in religious matters."

Additional comments:

This quote should supposedly be in Catholic Mirror, Sept 23, 1893 according to "Who Are These Three Angels?”, but it was not found [p.21]

In "Studies on Daniel and Revelation: A Compilation" on page 65 it is stated: "In reply to a letter inquiring of the Roman Catholic Church changed the Sabbath and considered the change as a mark of her authority, Cardinal Gibbons replied through The Catholic Mirror, his official organ, "Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change was her act. It could not have been otherwise, as none in those days would have dreamed of doing anything in matters spiritual and ecclesiastical and religious without her. And the act is a mark of her ecclesiastical power and authority in religious matters." September 23, 1893."

Possibly real quote: "Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change was her act. "The Catholic Church for over one thousand years before the existence of a Protestant, by virtue of her Divine mission, changed the day from Saturday to Sunday. "Sunday is founded, not of scripture, but on tradition. As there is no scripture for the transfer of the day of rest from the last to the first day of the week, Protestants ought to keep their Sabbath on Saturday and thus leave Catholics in full possession of Sunday."

Catholic Record, September 17, 1893.

Possibly real quote: “Sunday is founded, not of scripture, but on tradition, and is distinctly a Catholic institution. As there is no scripture for the transfer of the day of rest from the last to the first day of the week, Protestants ought to keep their Sabbath on Saturday and thus leave Catholics in full possession of Sunday”

"But there is something still wanting to a full statement of the untenable position taken up by those sticklers for "Sabbath" observance. What right, anyhow, have these gentlemen as Protestants to lay down the law as to what is to be done or not done on Sunday? Sunday is a Catholic institution, and its claims to observance can be defended only on Catholic principles. If the "Bible and the Bible only is the religion of Protestants," if "whatever is not read therein nor maybe proved thereby" has no claim on their faith or observance, what scrap of title can they show for all their dogmatic insistence as to the requirements of the Lord's Day? From beginning to end of Scripture there is not a single passage that warrants the transfer of weekly public worship from the last day of the week to the first. Thus Sunday observance is an incongruous adjunct of the Protestant faith, utterly out of keeping with its fundamental principle, and strongly suggests a religion that suffered sadly from too much hurry in the making.

If any Sabbatarian wants to know the proper method of spending the Sunday, the Catholic Church is the natural source to apply to for information. Under her direction the Sunday supplanted the Jewish Sabbath, and she is, therefore, the best fitted to settle any dispute as to its claims."

Translated:

Aldephonsus, by the grace of God, King of Aragon, Count of Barcelona,   Marquis of Province, all archbishops, bishops, and other prelates of the Churches of the kingdom, earls, sheriffs, soldiers and all peoples established in his kingdom and in his power, health and complete observance of the Christian religion. Since God willed us to rule over his people, it is worthy and just that we should bear in our efforts a continual solicitude for the salvation and defense of the same people. Wherefore, by following the imitation of our forefathers, and obeying the law of the canons, who voted that heretics should be condemned and persecuted everywhere, and cast out from the sight of God, and all the Catholics, as heretics. The Waldenses, or the Sabbaths, who by another name call themselves the Poor of Lyons, and all other heretics, whose number is not anathematized by the holy Church, go forth from all our kingdom and power, as enemies of the Cross of Christ, violators of the Christian religion, and our public enemies of the kingdom. we order them to flee. If, therefore, from this day, and afterward, the aforesaid Waldenses and Sabbaths, or any other heretics, of whatever profession they shall receive in their houses, or shall in any place hear the disastrous preaching of these, or presume to bestow food or some favor upon them, let them know that the wrath of the Almighty God and ours is that he had incurred and had to confiscate his property, without remedy of appeal, that he should be punished as a defendant of the crime of treason.

Justin Martyr, a popular "mainstream Christian" of the second century (around 150 AD) believed that the Sabbath was an outdated mosaic law which God placed on the Jews as "a mark to single them out for punishment they so well deserve for their infidelities."

Catholic Provincial Council at Bergen - "We are informed that some people in different districts of the kingdom, have adopted and observed Saturday-keeping. It is severely forbidden- in holy church canon- one and all to observe days excepting those which the holy Pope, archbishop, or the bishops command. Saturday-keeping must under no circumstances be permitted hereafter further than the church canon commands. Therefore, we counsel all the friends of God throughout all of Norway who want to be obedient towards the holy church to let this evil of Saturday-keeping alone; and the rest we forbid under penalty of severe church punishment to keep Saturday holy."

Q: Could the Church, if she so desired, change the day of Mass obligation from Sunday to another day in the week?

A: Absolutely speaking, Holy Mother Church has the power to designate what day shall be observed for God's special worship. She made use of this power in Apostolic times to change the Lord's Day from Saturday to Sunday, in order to show that the disciplinary precepts of the Old Testament were no longer in force with the advent of the Messias, who fulfilled the Jewish Law.

"The Pope is of great authority and power that he can modify, explain, or interpret even divine laws... The Pope can MODIFY divine law, since his power is not of man, But of God, and he acts as vicegerent of God upon earth."

"The authority of the church could therefore not be bound to the authority of the Scriptures, because the Church had changed the Sabbath into Sunday, not by command of Christ, but by its own authority."

The Scriptures enforce the religious observance of Saturday, a day which we never sanctify."

Question - Which is the Sabbath day?

Answer - Saturday is the Sabbath day.

Question - Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?

Answer - We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church, in the Council of Laodicea (A.D. 364), transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday.

The Convert's Catechism of Catholic Doctrine, 1937

Further quote:

"For example, the observance of Sunday. How can other denominations keep this day? The Bible commands you to keep the Sabbath day. Sunday is not the Sabbath day; no man dare assert that it is, for the Bible says as plainly as words can make it that the seventh day is the Sabbath, i.e., Saturday, for we know Sunday to be the first day of the week.  Besides, the Jews have been keeping the Sabbath unto the present day. I am not a rich man, but I will give $1,000 to any man who will prove by the Bible alone that Sunday is the day we are bound to keep. No, it cannot be done, it is impossible. The observance of Sunday is solely a law of the Catholic church, and therefore is not binding upon others. The church changed the Sabbath to Sunday and all the world bows down and worships upon that day in silent obedience to the mandates of the Catholic church. Is this not a living miracle? That those who hate us so bitterly obey and acknowledge our power every week and do not know it!"

"Perhaps the boldest thing, the most revolutionary change the Church ever did, happened in the first century. The holy day, the Sabbath, was changed  from Saturday to Sunday. Vatican admits to adopting PAGAN SUNDAY WORSHIP

"The retention of the old pagan name of Dies Solis, for Sunday is, in a great measure, owing to the union of pagan and Christian sentiment with which the first day of the week was recommended by Constantine to his subjects - pagan and Christian alike - as the 'venerable' day of the sun."

Arthur P. Stanley, Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church, 1864, p. 291

https://archive.org/details/lecturesonhisto21stangoog/page/290/mode/2up

"Thus we learn from Socrates (H.E. vi. c. 8) that in his time public worship was held in the churches of Constantinopole on both days [...] The view that the Christian Lord's day or Sunday is but the Christian Sabbath transferred from the seventh to the first day of the week does not find categorical expression till a much later period [...] The earliest recognition of the observance of Sunday as a legal duty is a constitution of Constantine in 321 A.D., enacting that all courts of justice, inhabitants of towns, and workshops were to be at rest on Sunday (venerabili die solis), with an exception in favour of those engaged in agricultural labour. [...] The Council of Laodicea (363), which forbids Christians from Judaizing and resting on the Sabbath day, and actually enjoins them to work on that day, preferring the Lord's day and so far as possible resting as Christians."

Encyclopaedia Britannica, 11th edition, vol. XXVI, 1911, p.94,95

"Sunday was a name given by the heathens to the first day of the week, because it was the day on which they worshipped the sun; [...] ...the seventh day was blessed and hallowed by God Himself, and [...] He requires His creatures to keep it holy to Him. This commandment is of universal and perpetual obligation. [...] The Creator "blessed the seventh day"-declared it to be a day above all days, a day on which His favour should assuredly rest. [...] So long, then, as man exists, and the world around him endures, does the law of the early Sabbath remain. It cannot be set aside so long as its foundations last. [...] It is not the Jewish Sabbath, properly so called, which is ordained in the fourth commandment. In the whole of that injunction there is no Jewish element, any more than there is in the third commandment, or the sixth."

Biblical Cyclopedia, John Eadie, 1872, p. 561

"...pastoral intuition suggested to the Church the christianization of the notion of Sunday as "the day of the sun", which was the Roman name for the day and which is retained in some modern languages. This was in order to draw the faithful away from the seduction of cults which worshipped the sun, and to direct the celebration of the day to Christ, humanity's true "sun"."

Pope John Paul II, Dies Domini, 31 May 1998

"The Sun was a foremost god with heathendom. [...] The sun has worshippers at this hour in Persia and other lands. [...] There is, in truth, something royal, kingly about the sun, making it a fit emblem of Jesus, the Sun of Justice. Hence the church in these countries would seem to have said, "Keep that old pagan name. It shall remain consecrated, sanctified." And thus the pagan Sunday, dedicated to Balder, became the Christian Sunday, sacred to Jesus."

The Catholic World, Paschale Gaudium by William L. Gildea, March 1894, p. 809

"There is but one on the face of the earth - the Catholic Church -  that has the power, to make laws binding upon the conscience, binding before God, binding under pain of hell fire. Take for instance the day we celebrate-Sunday. What right have the Protestant churches to observe that day? None whatever. You say it is to obey the commandment, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." But Sunday is not the Sabbath according to the Bible and the record of time. Every one knows that Sunday is the first day of the week, while Saturday is the seventh day and the Sabbath, the day consecrated as a day of rest. It is so recognized in all civilized nations. I have repeatedly offered $1,000 to any one who will furnish any proof from the Bible that Sunday is the day we are bound to keep, and no one has called for the money. [...] It was the Holy Catholic Church that changed the day of rest from Saturday to Sunday, the first day of the week."

"O Mary, mother of mercy and refuge of sinners! we beseech thee to look with pitying eyes on heretical and schismatical nations. Do thou, who art the seat of wisdom, illumine their minds, wretchedly involved in the darkness of ignorance and sin, that they may know the Holy, Catholic, Apostolic, Roman Church to be the only true Church of Jesus Christ, out of which no sanctity or salvation can be found. Finally, complete their conversion by obtaining for them the grace to believe every truth of our holy faith, and to submit to the Sovereign Roman Pontiff, the vicar of Jesus Christ on earth, that thus, being soon united to us by the bonds of divine charity, they may make with us but one fold under one and the same pastor, and that we may thus, O Glorious Virgin! all sing exultingly forever: "Rejoice, O Virgin Mary! alone thou hast destroyed all heresies in the whole world." Amen."

May 7, 1997 (David W. Cloud, Fundamental Baptist News Service, 1701 Harns Rd., Oak Harbor, WA 98277) - On May 7 Pope John Paul II dedicated his general audience to "the Virgin Mary" and urged all Christians to accept Mary as their mother. He noted the words spoken by Jesus on the cross to Mary and to John--"Woman, behold thy son!" and "Behold thy mother!" (John 19:26,27), and he claimed that in this statement "IT IS POSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND THE AUTHENTIC MEANING OF MARIAN WORSHIP in the ecclesial community ... which furthermore is based on the will of Christ"

Vatican Information Service, May 7, 1997

Actual source:

"In the light of this entrustment to his beloved disciple, one can understand the authentic meaning of Marian devotion in the ecclesial community. In fact, it places Christians in Jesus’ filial relationship to his mother, putting them in a condition to grow in intimacy with both of them. The Church’s devotion to the Virgin is not only the fruit of a spontaneous response to the exceptional value of her person and the importance of her role in the work of salvation, but is based on Christ’s will."

The source, then, is Jesus Christ [...] But Mary, as St. Bernard justly remarks, is the channel; or, if you will, the connecting portion the function of which is to join the body to the head and to transmit to the body the influences and volitions of the head - We mean the neck. [...] by which He communicates to His mystical body all spiritual gifts."

Popes declaring salvation is only found in Roman Catholic church

"Do not hold aloof from the Church; for nothing is stronger than the Church. The Church is thy hope, thy salvation, thy refuge."

Into this fold of Jesus Christ, no man may enter unless he be led by the Sovereign Pontiff; and only if they be united to him can men be saved, for the Roman Pontiff is the Vicar of Christ and His personal representative on earth."

 Pope Eugene IV

"The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatic's, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can profit by the sacraments of the Church unto salvation, and they alone can receive an eternal recompense for their fasts, their alms giving, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, no one, even if he pour out his blood for the Name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church."

Denzinger, par. 469, p. 187 [note: This definition (de fide definita) seems unanswerable, but the liberals boldly claim that this is not a definition intended for the universal Church, but only a pronouncement meant to deal with the local problem of Philip the Fair. But when Philip demanded of Pope Clement V, the first Avignon Pope, that he withdraw Unam Sanctam, Pope Clement did not do so, but issued the Brief Meruit February 1, 1306, which despite its extremely conciliatory tone, clearly states that Unam Sanctam contains a "definition":]

Pope Leo X reaffirmed the teaching of Boniface VIII: (1512-1517)

"Where the necessity of salvation is concerned all the faithful of Christ must be subject to the Roman Pontiff, as we are taught by Holy Scripture, the testimony of the holy fathers, and by that constitution of our predecessor of happy memory, Boniface VIII, which begins Unam Sanctam."

 Pope Leo XII (A.D. 1823 - 1829)

"[...]we profess that there is no salvation outside the Church. [...] the Church is the pillar and firmament of truth, as the apostle Paul teaches.  Pope Pius IX (A.D. 1846 - 1878)

"For, it must be held by faith that outside the Apostolic Roman Church, no one can be saved; that this is the only ark of salvation; that he who shall not have entered therein will perish in the flood"

Denzinger, par. 1647, p. 416

 Pope Leo XIII: (A.D. 1878 - 1903)

"He willed to perpetuate the office assigned to Him by His Father by means of the ministry of the Church so gloriously founded by Himself. On the one hand He confided to her all the means of men's salvation, on the other He most solemnly commanded men to be subject to her and to obey her diligently, and to follow her even as Himself: "He that heareth you, heareth Me; and he that despiseth you, despiseth Me" (Luke X, 16). Wherefore the law of Christ must be sought in the Church. Christ is man's "Way"; the Church also is his "Way"-Christ of Himself and by His very nature, the Church by His commission and the communication of His power. Hence all who would find salvation apart from the Church, are led astray and strive in vain."

 Pope St. Pius X: A.D. 1903 - 1914)

"We, strengthened by this faith, firmly established on this rock, realizing to the full all the heavy duties that the Primacy imposes on Us - but also all the vigor that comes to Us from the Divine Will - calmly wait until all the voices be scattered to the winds that now shout around Us proclaiming that the Church has gone beyond her time, that her doctrines are passed away for ever, that the day is at hand when she will be condemned either to accept the tenets of a godless science and civilization or to disappear from human society. Yet at the same time We cannot but remind all, great and small, as Pope St. Gregory did, of the absolute necessity of having recourse to this Church in order to have eternal salvation, to follow the right road of reason, to feed on the truth, to obtain peace and even happiness in this life. Wherefore, to use the words of the Holy Pontiff, "Turn your steps towards this unshaken rock upon which Our Savior founded the Universal Church, so that the path of him who is sincere of heart may not be lost in devious windings"."

Pope Pius X, Encyclical, Iucunda Sane, 12 March 1904

https://www.vatican.va/content/pius-x/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-x_enc_12031904_iucunda-sane.html

 Pope Pius XI:

"Furthermore, in this one Church of Christ no man can be or remain who does not accept, recognize and obey the authority and supremacy of Peter and his legitimate successors. Did not the ancestors of those who are now entangled in the errors of Photius and the reformers, obey the Bishop of Rome, the chief shepherd of souls? Alas their children left the home of their fathers, but it did not fall to the ground and perish for ever, for it was supported by God. Let them therefore return to their common Father, who, forgetting the insults previously heaped on the Apostolic See, will receive them in the most loving fashion. For if, as they continually state, they long to be united with Us and ours, why do they not hasten to enter the Church, "the Mother and mistress of all Christ's faithful"? Let them hear Lactantius crying out: "The Catholic Church is alone in keeping the true worship. This is the fount of truth, this the house of Faith, this the temple of God: if any man enter not here, or if any man go forth from it, he is a stranger to the hope of life and salvation. Let none delude himself with obstinate wrangling. For life and salvation are here concerned, which will be lost and entirely destroyed, unless their interests are carefully and assiduously kept in mind.'"

 Pope Pius XII: (A.D. 1939 - 1958)

"Nor against this may one argue that the primacy of jurisdiction established in the Church gives such a Mystical Body two heads. For Peter in view of his primacy is only Christ's Vicar; so that there is only one chief Head of this Body, namely Christ, who never ceases Himself to guide the Church invisibly, though at the same time He rules it visibly, through him who is His representative on earth. After His glorious Ascension into Heaven this Church rested not on Him alone, but on Peter, too, its visible foundation stone. That Christ and His Vicar constitute one only Head is the solemn teaching of Our predecessor of immortal memory Boniface VIII in the Apostolic Letter Unam Sanctam; and his successors have never ceased to repeat the same. They, therefore, walk in the path of dangerous error who believe that they can accept Christ as the Head of the Church, while not adhering loyally to His Vicar on earth. They have taken away the visible head, broken the visible bonds of unity and left the Mystical Body of the Redeemer so obscured and so maimed, that those who are seeking the haven of eternal salvation can neither see it nor find it."

Finally, complete their conversion by obtaining for them the grace to believe every truth of our holy faith, and to submit to the Sovereign Roman Pontiff, the vicar of Jesus Christ on earth, that thus, being soon united to us by the bonds of divine charity, they may make with us but one fold under one and the same pastor, and that we may thus, O Glorious Virgin! all sing exultingly forever: "Rejoice, O Virgin Mary! alone thou hast destroyed all heresies in the whole world." "It is also difficult to accept some truths, because the truths of faith are of two kinds; some pleasant, others unpalatable to our spirit. For example, it is pleasant to hear that God has so much tenderness for us, even more tenderness than a mother has for her children, as Isaiah says. [...] Other truths, on the contrary, are hard to accept. God must punish, if I resist. [...] This is not agreeable. [...] It is clear that Jesus and the Christians, Jesus and the Church are the same thing: indissoluble, inseparable. Christ and the Church are only one thing. [...] It is not possible to have faith and to say, "I believe in Jesus, I accept Jesus but I do not accept the Church." [...] When the poor Pope, when the bishops, the priests, propose the doctrine, they are merely helping Christ. It is not our doctrine, it is Christ's; we must just guard it and present it."

 Pope John Paul II:

"The mystery of salvation is revealed to us and is continued and accomplished in the Church...and from this genuine and single source, like 'humble, useful, precious and chaste' water, it reaches the whole world. Dear young people and members of the faithful, like Brother Francis we have to be conscious and absorb this fundamental and revealed truth, consecrated by tradition: 'There is no salvation outside the Church.' From her alone there flows surely and fully the life-giving force destined in Christ and in His Spirit, to renew the whole of humanity, and therefore directing every human being to become a part of the Mystical Body of Christ."
