Introduction

Like the science in the word study, we thought it good to create a science in the testimonies study. For all those unware, when we at Plucked Out say “the testimonies” this refers to the writings of a prophetess called Ellen White. It was prophesied that we would receive prophets up until the time of the second coming Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions”. You will see evidence on this page that she is indeed a prophet with scientific insight known before we understood them, but you can also see other prophecies of hers here (click this link).

A quick look into Ellen White’s scientific background.

I did not attend school after I was twelve years old. And I did not feel satisfied with what I enjoyed. I longed to be sanctified to God. But sanctification was preached in such a manner that I could not understand it, and thought that I never could attain to it, and settled down with my present enjoyment”. – Spiritual Gifts volume 2

Ellen White since having a stone thrown at her face at the age of nine, had greatly impaired learning. She details this in her book Spiritual gifts, volume 2. Hence, Ellen White ended schooling around 6th grade, in the United Kingdom that’s year 7/8. We can conclude that Sister White’s education was way below average. That someone with a 6th grade education could understand scientific literature today would be rare, let alone well over a century and a half ago. Access to information was harder, and often you had to know what you were looking for before you went to a library. The author is painting this picture so the reader can see how Ellen White was not smart or talented by worldly standards, although it’s clear with the Lord she gained wisdom as she grew, rather that the Lord could use her.

World war

Did new vessels of warfare get buried in the great deep?

Sister White: “The nations of the world are eager for conflict; but they are held in check by the angels. When this restraining power is removed, there will come a time of trouble and anguish. Deadly instruments of warfare will be invented. Vessels, with their living cargo, will be entombed in the great deep”. 15LtMs, Lt 79, 1900, par. 34

The planning and conduct of war in 1914 were crucially influenced by the invention of new weapons and the improvement of existing types since the Franco-German War of 1870–71”. - Britannica

Vessels entombed in the great deep: “A total of 66 servicemen were lost after the vessel was torpedoed by a German submarine, on 6 December 1917. Plymouth diver Dom Robinson, who was part of Team Darkstar, said the find was "every diver's dream". The USS Jacob Jones, was found more than 328ft (100m) under the water on 11 August with some of its features still intact. The ship's torpedo tubes, bell and boilers are clearly visible in the footage”. – BBC.co.uk

“In 1944, the USS Johnston sank after a battle against the world's largest battleship. More than 75 years later, her wreck was finally located, 6km (3.7 miles) below the waves”. – BBC.com

Geology

Does water play a role in earthquakes?

Sister White: “Water and fire under the surface of the earth meet. The action of water upon the limestone adds fury to the intense heat, and causes earthquakes, volcanoes, and fiery issues. The action of fire and water upon the ledges of rocks and ore causes loud explosions which sound like muffled thunder”.  – Spiritual Gifts, volume 3, page 79, 1864

Scientists have for the first time linked the deep Earth’s water cycle to earthquakes and volcanic activity. As tectonic plates journey from where they are first made at mid-ocean ridges to subduction zones – where they meet other plates – seawater enters the rocks through cracks, faults and by binding to minerals. Upon reaching a subduction zone, the sinking plate heats up and gets squeezed, resulting in the gradual release of some or all of its water.  As water is released, it lowers the melting point of the surrounding rocks and generates magma. This magma is buoyant and moves upwards, ultimately leading to eruptions in the overlying chain of volcanic islands, called a volcanic arc… The same process can trigger earthquakes and may affect key properties such as their magnitude and whether they trigger tsunamis or not…

…Dr Cooper said: “Our study provides conclusive evidence that directly links the water-in and water-out parts of the cycle and its expressions in terms of magmatic productivity and earthquake activity. This may encourage studies at other subduction zones to find such water-bearing fault structures on the subducting plate to help understand patterns in volcanic and earthquake hazards…

Next, the researchers will look into how this pattern of water release may affect the potential for larger earthquakes and possible tsunamis” – Imperial.ac.ak

Flesh-meat

Can flesh-meat cause cancer?

Sister White: “In some families, flesh meats constitute the principle article of diet, and in consequence the blood is filled with cancerous and scrofulous humors. Then when suffering and disease come, Providence is charged with that which is the effect of a wrong course. I repeat: intemperance begins at the table, and with the majority appetite is indulged until indulgence becomes second nature.” – Letters and Manuscripts, Ms 5, 1875

In cancer, cells grow and multiply beyond normal limits. In 1910 Peyton Rous extracted material from a cancer tumor in a hen and injected it into a healthy chicken. The chicken developed cancer, and he concluded that cells from the hen’s tumor contained an infectious substance, a virus, that transmits cancer. However, the study could not be replicated in mammals and was long overlooked. When research showed that viruses can operate by affecting the genetic material of normal germ cells, interest in Rous’ discovery was reignited”. -Nobel Prize

Can cancer be spread by a germ?

Sister White: “Flesh was never the best food; but its use is now doubly objectionable, since disease in animals is rapidly increasing. Those who use flesh foods little know what they are eating. Often if they could see the animals when living, and know the quality of the meat they eat, they would turn from it with loathing. People are continually eating flesh that is filled with tuberculosis and cancerous germs”.  – Life and health 1905

The first infectious source of cancer was discovered in 1911when a virus was first associated with cancer in chickens. Frances Peyton Rous, a virologist at Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, transferred bacteria-free and cell-free extracts from a chicken with a lump in its breast to a healthy chicken. Much to his surprise, the recipient chicken developed breast cancer. Rous later received one part of the 1966 Nobel Prize for his discovery of tumor-inducing viruses”. - asm

Is there evidence eating meat cause pulmonary disease?

Sister White: “God's curse is resting upon the animal creation. Many times when meat is eaten it decays in the stomach, and creates disease. Cancers, tumors, and pulmonary diseases are largely caused by meat-eating”. – Pacific union Recorder, 1902.

“chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was the third most common cause of death worldwide in 2010. The predominant risk factor for COPD in the developed world is cigarette smoking, but up to one-third of COPD patients have never smoked, suggesting that other factors are involved. Relatively little attention has been paid to these other factors, such as diet, and how their modification might decrease the global burden of COPD”.

“In this issue of the European Respiratory Journal, Okubo et al. report diet–lung results from a cross-sectional analysis of 1551 males and 1391 females from the UK. Briefly, they found that consumption of processed meats (i.e. bacon, gammon, ham, corned beef, spam and luncheon meat, sausage, and meat pies) was associated with worse lung function, in both males and females. These results are consistent with a previous cross-sectional study in a large US population showing that frequent consumption of cured meats was associated with lower forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and FEV1/forced vital capacity and an increased risk of COPD...

In the meantime, prior publications and the new results of Okubo et al. suggest that processed meat intake may adversely affect lung function and the risk of COPD”. – European Respiratory Journal

“Processed meat intake may increase the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the magnitude of this association may depend on smoking and unhealthy die”. – the Lancet

Can flesh-meat cause apoplexy (stroke)?

Sister White: “Some animals that are brought to the slaughter seem to realize by instinct what is to take place, and they become furious, and literally mad. They are killed while in that state, and their flesh prepared for market. Their meat is poison, and has produced, in those who have eaten it, cramp, convulsions, apoplexy [strokes], and sudden death. Yet the cause of all this suffering is not attributed to the meat”. – Spiritual Gifts Volume 4, 1864

“Fat in the diet has long been linked to stroke risk, but new research presented Monday suggests that it’s the type of fat, not the amount, that may be the more important factor.  The study found that eating more animal fat was linked to a higher risk of stroke, while getting more fat from vegetable sources was linked to a lower risk… The results come from 27 years of data from more than 117,000 health care professionals. The data were pulled from two of the largest and longest-running nutritional studies in the U.S. — the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study”. - nbcnews

The Harms Associated with Eating More Southern-Style Food | NutritionFacts.org

Does eating more meat hamper cognition?

Sister White: “Those who use flesh-meats freely, do not always have an unclouded brain and an active intellect, because the use of the flesh of animals tends to cause a grossness of body, and to benumb the finer sensibilities of the mind. The liability to disease is increased by flesh-eating. We do not hesitate to say that meat is not essential to the maintenance of health and strength”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 47, 1890

“In this cross-sectional analysis of the adult UK population, higher intake of red meat was associated with poorer cognitive function including reaction and reasoning ability, short-term and prospective memory especially among men; but not visual-spatial memory which showed a weak protective effect of red meat”. – academic.oup

Can meat transmit cholera?

Sister White: “Many die of disease caused wholly by meat-eating, yet the world does not seem to be the wiser. Animals are frequently killed that have been driven quite a distance for the slaughter. Their blood has become heated. They are full of flesh, and have been deprived of healthy exercise, and when they have to travel far, they become surfeited, and exhausted, and in that condition are killed for market. Their blood is highly inflamed, and those who eat of their meat, eat poison. Some are not immediately affected, while others are attacked with severe pain, and die from fever, cholera, or some unknown disease”. – Spiritual gifts, volume 4a, 1864

See how misunderstood Cholera was in the time of sister White: “Despite the earlier work of Dr. John Snow, many still believed that cholera was caused by miasmata.  Just 10 years earlier at a major 1874 international sanitary conference, representatives of 21 governments voted unanimously that ‘ambient air is the principal vehicle of the generative agent of cholera.’” – UCLA

“Cholera has been recognized as a killer disease since earliest time. Since 1817, six pandemics have swept over the world, and the seventh one is in progress. The disease is caused by infection of the small intestine by Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 and is characterized by massive acute diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration: death occurs in severe, untreated cases. Cholera is a highly contagious disease, and is transmitted primarily by ingestion of faecally-contaminated water by susceptible persons. Besides water, foods have also been recognized as an important vehicle for transmission of cholera. Foods are likely to be faecally contaminated during preparation, particularly by infected food handlers in an unhygienic environment … Seafoods, including fish, shellfish, crabs, oysters and clams, have all been incriminated in cholera outbreaks in many countries, including the United States and Australia. Contaminated rice, millet gruel, and vegetables have also been implicated in several outbreaks. Other foods, including fruits (except sour fruits), poultry, meat, and dairy products, have the potential of transmitting cholera. To reduce the risk of food-borne transmission of cholera, it is recommended that foods should be prepared, served, and eaten in an hygienic environment, free from faecal contamination”. - jstor

Note: before one thinks, well rice and vegetables can spread cholera from contamination. The likelihood of contamination is way lower, where as modern animals fed for consumption are usually left to wallow in their faeces.

Does pork cause cancer?

The eating of pork has produced scrofula, leprosy, and cancerous humors. Pork eating is still causing the most intense suffering to the human race”.  – Spiritual Gifts volume 4a, 1864, page 146

“You’ve probably seen plenty of headlines about the fact that processed meat has been classified as a ‘definite’ cause of cancer. And red meat is a ‘probable’ cause.

…The decision – coordinated by a respected international body – has been so highly anticipated by the media that speculation about the announcement has been building since last week…But a link between certain types of meat and some forms of cancer – notably bowel cancer – isn’t ‘new’ news – the evidence has been building for decades, and is supported by a lot of careful research…Nevertheless, today’s announcement is significant. It comes from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) – a group of international experts who scrutinise the overall evidence – in this case more than 800 studies – on how likely certain things are to cause cancer. Their decisions carry a lot of clout, especially with governments and regulators… Red’ meat is (as you might expect), any meat that’s a dark red colour before it’s cooked – this obviously means meats like beef and lamb, but also includes pork. ‘Processed’ meat is meat that’s not sold fresh, but instead has been cured, salted, smoked, or otherwise preserved in some way (so things like bacon, sausages, hot dogs, ham, salami, and pepperoni). But this doesn’t include fresh burgers or mince.” -  cancerresearchuk

Are you more likely to catch a myriad of diseases eating meat?

Sister White: “The liability to take disease is increased tenfold by meat eating”. -Testimonies for the Church 2:64

Stimulants

Is tobacco dangerous and does it weaken the brain?

Sister White: “Tobacco is a slow, insidious, but most malignant poison....It is all the more dangerous because its effects are slow and at first hardly perceptible.”— Testimonies for the church volume 3

“During the 1920s the first medical reports linking smoking to lung cancer began to appear. Many newspaper editors refused to report these findings as they did not want to offend tobacco companies who advertised heavily in the media A series of major medical reports in the 1950s and 1960s confirmed that tobacco caused a range of serious diseases”. – Cancer Council

“The first half of the 20th century was the golden age of the cigarette. In 1950 around half of the population of industrialized countries smoked, though that figure hides the fact that in countries such as the United Kingdom up to 80 percent of adult men were regular smokers”. -Britannica

It must be noted Benjamin Rush who spoke against smoking earlier than Sister White, doesn’t make the connection tobacco could have on the brain or lungs. (source)

Sister White: “Tobacco weakens the brain, and paralyzes its fine sensibilities. Its use excites a thirst for strong drink, and in very many cases lays the foundation for the liquor habit”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 1890

Sister White: “Tobacco is a slow but sure poison which destroys the nerve-brain power, rendering the user unable to discriminate between good and evil, righteousness and sin”. – Letters and Manuscripts 1901

“We found that smokers had a thinner cerebral cortex than non-smokers – in other words, smoking was destroying the grey matter in smokers. This is important because the cerebral cortex is a part of the brain that is crucial for thinking skills including memory and learning, so thicker is better…Although behavioral effects of nicotine had been recognized and described hundreds of years earlier, the physiological roles and importance of neuronal nAChRs in the brain were not widely appreciated until as recently as the early 1980s” – National Library of Medicine

Simplification: Smoking was found to thin the cerebral cortex, a crucial part of the brain for thinking skills like memory and learning, in smokers compared to non-smokers. The role and importance of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the brain was not understood until the 1980s.

Does second hand smoke damage the victim’s lungs?

Sister White: “Many infants are poisoned beyond remedy by sleeping in beds with their tobacco-using fathersBy inhaling the poisonous tobacco effluvium, which is thrown from the lungs and pores of the skin, the system of the infant is filled with poison. While it acts upon some infants as a slow poison, and affects the brain, heart, liver, and lungs, and they waste away and fade gradually; upon others it has a more direct influence, causing spasms, paralysis, and sudden death. The bereaved parents mourn the loss of their loved ones, and wonder at the mysterious providence of God, which has so cruelly afflicted them, when Providence designed not the death of these infants. They died martyrs to the filthy lust for tobacco. Every exhalation of the lungs of the tobacco slave poisons the air about him”. .—The Health Reformer, January 1, 1872

“regard to the effect of smoking on maternal and infant health, the 1969 report on Health Consequences of Smoking warned that smoking during pregnancy could lead to spontaneous abortion, stillbirth, and neonatal death. Health Consequences of Smoking for Women, published in 1980, declared that toxic substances in cigarette smoke, such as nicotine and hydrogen cyanide, "cross the placenta to affect the fetus directly" and retard fetal growth, resulting in a higher likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and of impeded physical and possibly cognitive development. By 1980, lung cancer accounted for nearly as many deaths among women as breast cancer, and would soon account for more”.

The reports of the Surgeons General helped transform the cigarette from an icon of twentieth-century American individualism to a sign of personal disregard for health. Yet, this shift in the conception of smoking from social norm to social stigma did not end the debate over the health effects or the ethics of smoking. In the United States, smoking was still regarded as a matter of personal choice and private risk, not of communal good or public policy… Anti-smoking forces, the Surgeon General prominent among them, changed the terms of this debate. Smoking, it was now maintained affected the health of millions of non-smoking Americans, mostly women and children, by exposing them to the dangers of involuntary smoking. While the 1964 report on smoking and health had shown authoritatively that smoking was a serious health threat to the individual, several Surgeon General's reports published in the 1970s and 1980s demonstrated the social cost of passive smoking. Surgeon General Jesse Steinfeld's 1972 report on the health consequences of smoking first raised concern. Reports published in 1979 and 1984, respectively, on smoking and cancer and smoking and chronic obstructive lung disease, went into greater detail on the issue, but stopped short of a definitive statement. However, Surgeon General C. Everett Koop's 1986 report, The Health Consequences of Involuntary Smoking, decisively portrayed second-hand smoke not just as an annoyance, but as a quantifiable health risk. Sustained exposure to second-hand smoke was equivalent to smoking about two cigarettes a day, a very moderate rate of cigarette consumption but one that nevertheless increased the risk of lung cancer and other diseases”. - Secondary Smoking, Individual Rights, and Public Space | Reports of the Surgeon General - Profiles in Science (nih.gov)

Does alcohol breakdown your nerves?

Sister White: “Both tobacco and liquor break down nerve force, and dull the finer perceptions, so that the slaves to these habits cannot discern between sacred and common things”. -Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 17, 1890

“Tobacco has a significant negative impact on the development of nervous structures, neurotransmission and cognitive functions, and promotes the development of neurodegenerative diseases, insomnia and cerebrovascular diseases. The only exception is the protective effect of the dopaminergic system in Parkinson's disease

Alcohol has a suppressing effect on the brain and central nervous system. Research has shown that when alcohol is removed from the body, it activates brain and nerve cells, resulting in excessive excitability (hyperexcitability). This can lead to behavioural symptoms such as seizures”. – National Library of Medicine

Can tea and coffee cause palpitations?

Note: These teas would contain caffeine

Sister White: “The second effect of tea drinking is headache, wakefulness, palpitation of the heart, indigestion, trembling, and many other evils”. – Testimonies for the church volume 2, 1868, page 65

“According to Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD, medical toxicologist, and Co-Medical Director of Poison Control, black teas can increase the likelihood of palpitations because they contain caffeine. “Caffeine is a stimulant or ‘upper’ type of drug,” Dr. Johnson-Arbor says. “When taken in high doses, it can cause heart palpitations, anxiety, chest pain, sweating, and tremors. Black teas contain higher amounts of caffeine than green or white teas, and decaffeinated tea contains minimal caffeine.” - Certain Teas Can Cause Heart Palpitations - First For Women

“At low doses (<2 μg/mL in blood), caffeine stimulates the central nervous system but high blood concentration of caffeine (10–30 μg/mL) may produce restlessness, excitement, tremor, tinnitus, headache, and insomnia. This conclusion was reported by Kaplan et al., who observed that a lower dose (250 mg) of caffeine produced more positive effects (elation, peacefulness, pleasantness) than the higher dose (500 mg), which produced more negative effects (tension, nervousness, anxiety, excitement, irritability, nausea, palpitations, restlessness). Additionally, Watson et al. documented the association between caffeine consumption and sleep quality in a group of 80 Australian adults (aged 38.9 ± 19.3 years). The study was based on a caffeine food frequency questionnaire and proved that higher doses of caffeine (192.1 ± 122.5 mg) were associated with worse sleep quality compared to lower doses of caffeine (25.2 ± 62.6 mg)”. - MDPI

Can tea and coffee lead to headaches?

Note: the teas and coffees were caffeinated In her day.

Sister White: “The habit of drinking tea and coffee is a greater evil than is often suspected. Many who have accustomed themselves to the use of stimulating drinks, suffer from headache and nervous prostration, and lose much time on account of sickness. They imagine they cannot live without the stimulus, and are ignorant of its effect upon health. What makes it the more dangerous is, that its evil effects are so often attributed to other causes”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 35, 1890

“In general, chronic consumption of caffeine seems to increase the burden of migraine, but a protective effect as an acute treatment or in severely affected patients cannot be excluded. Future clinical trials should explore the relationship between caffeine withdrawal and migraine, and investigate the effects of long-term elimination”. – National Library of Medicine

Coffee affects the brain?

Sister White: “Coffee is a hurtful indulgence. It temporarily excites the mind to unwonted action, and the effect is prostration, sadness, exhaustion of the mental, moral, and physical forces. The mind becomes enervated, and unless through determined effort the habit is overcome, the activity of the brain is greatly lessened. All these nerve irritants are wearing away the life forces, and the restlessness caused by shattered nerves, the impatience, the mental feebleness, becomes a warring element against spiritual progress”. - Review and Herald, 1887, April 19

“This study provides the first extended characterization of the effects of chronic coffee consumption on human brain networks. Subjects were recruited and divided into two groups: habitual coffee drinkers (CD) and non-coffee drinkers (NCD). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was acquired in these volunteers who were also assessed regarding stress, anxiety, and depression scores. In the neuroimaging evaluation, the CD group showed decreased functional connectivity in the somatosensory and limbic networks during resting state as assessed with independent component analysis”. - Nature

Simplification: This study above looked at the effects of drinking coffee on the brain. People were divided into two groups: coffee drinkers and non-coffee drinkers. Brain scans were done while the participants were resting and they were also checked for stress, anxiety, and depression. The results showed that the coffee drinkers had weaker connections in certain parts of their brain while resting.

“Another recent report might be stressing the importance of moderation when it comes to caffeinated beverages, however. This research suggested that high levels of coffee consumption can reduce the volume of gray matter in the human brain, and also that this loss can increase the risk of dementia. In this study, reported in Nutritional Neuroscience, scientists used data from the UK Biobank. This work included 17,702 people aged 37 to 73 and revealed that those who consumed over six cups of coffee per day had a 53 percent higher risk of dementia”. - labroots

Spice

Can spice harm the stomach?

Sister White: “You have perhaps seen a picture of the stomach of one who is addicted to strong drink. A similar condition is produced under the irritating influence of fiery spices”. - Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 17, 1890

“Gastritis is when your stomach lining gets red and swollen (inflamed). Your stomach lining is strong. In most cases acid does not hurt it. But it can get inflamed and irritated if you drink too much alcohol, eat spicy foods, or smoke”. – Hopkins medicine

“Alcoholic gastritis is caused by drinking too much, too often. The alcohol can gradually irritate and erode your stomach lining. This triggers gastritis symptoms”. - WebMD

“Capsaicin can irritate the stomach lining or intestines. Some people may be able to handle it. But if you have a more sensitive gut, it often causes diarrhea”. - very well

Are those who eat spicy foods more likely to smoke?

Sister White: “You have perhaps seen a picture of the stomach of one who is addicted to strong drink. A similar condition is produced under the irritating influence of fiery spices. With the stomach in such a state, there is a craving for something more to meet the demands of the appetite, something stronger, and still strongerNext you find your sons out on the street learning to smoke”. - Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 17, 1890

“This study aimed to describe the characteristics and lifestyle differences of spicy food consumption in 0.5 million adults. Participants were recruited from 2004 to 2008 in the baseline research of the CKB study. Higher frequency and stronger pungency degree in spicy food positively correlated with preference for salty taste, eating snacks/deep-fried foods, tea/alcohol drinking and tobacco smoking”. – tandfonline

Sugar

Does sugar cloud the brain?

Sister White: “Sugar is not good for the stomach. It causes fermentation, and this clouds the brain and brings peevishness [irritability] into the disposition”. – Letters and manuscripts 1901 (This was against excess sugar, further clarification with regards to sugar added just below next quote)

“Studies of long-term diabetics show progressive brain damage leading to deficits in:

  • Learning
  • Memory
  • Motor speed
  • Other cognitive functions.

Frequent exposure to high glucose levels diminishes mental capacity, as higher HbA1c levels have been associated with a greater degree of brain shrinkage. Even in those without diabetes, higher sugar consumption is associated with lower scores on tests of cognitive function. These effects are thought to be due to a combination of hyperglycemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, and elevated cholesterol. Additional research shows that a diet high in added sugar reduces the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a brain chemical essential for new memory formation and learning”. - verywellmind

Note: some sugar is fine, what’s being spoken against here is excess in sugar. Sister White mentions herself when giving an example desert: “A moderate amount of milk and sugar, a little salt, white bread raised with yeast for a change, graham flour prepared in a variety of ways by other hands than her, plain cake with raisins, rice pudding with raisins, prunes, and figs, occasionally, and many other dishes I might mention, would have answered the demand of appetite”.—Testimonies for the Church 2:383, 384, 1870 (Milk will be touched on later in this study, this also doesn’t mean everything in moderation is fine, some things are just bad like stimulants).

Exercise

Can exercise strengthen the nerves?

Sister White: “I have been led to inquire, Must all that is valuable in our youth be sacrificed, in order that they may obtain an education at the schools? The constant strain upon the brain, while the muscles are inactiveenfeebles the nerves…” - The health reformer 1873

“We found evidence of multiple regional adaptations to both forced and voluntary exercise. Exercise can induce molecular adaptations in neuronal function in many instances. Taken together, these findings suggest that the regional physiological adaptations that occur with exercise could constitute a promising field for elucidating molecular and cellular mechanisms of recovery in psychiatric and neurological health conditions”. – National Library of Medicine

Simplification: Exercise can lead to changes in the brain that help with recovery from mental and neurological conditions. This was shown by studying the effects of exercise on mice.

“Behaviorally aerobic exercise is associated with improved performance in abilities coordinated by the frontal and temporal cortices, such as executive function and memory. The precise neurobiological mechanism for such cognitive effects remains unknown, however a vast rodent literature supports a central role of protective neurotrophins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), which have been shown to facilitate production of new neurons in the hippocampus, promote synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex, and enhance growth and protection of neurovasculature. Thus literature suggests exercise may promote formation and strengthening of connections between the hippocampus and its widespread cortical connections, including connections with the frontal and temporal cortex, and projections to the parietal and lateral occipital cortex through cingulate pathways”. – National Library of Medicine

Simplification: Exercise can improve memory and decision-making skills by affecting the frontal and temporal parts of the brain. The exact way this happens is not known, but studies in mice suggest that it may be due to increased production of growth factors that protect nerve cells in the brain. This increased production may lead to the formation of new connections between the brain's memory center (the hippocampus) and other parts of the brain that are involved in memory and decision-making.

Does exercise aid improve the digestive organs?

Sister White: “Exercise aids the dyspeptic by giving the digestive organs a healthy tone”. – Letters and manuscripts, Ms2, 1870

“Just 20 minutes of exercise may help fight inflammation in the body, a new study suggests. In the study, 47 people walked on a treadmill at a brisk pace for 20 minutes, and had blood samples taken before and after this exercise session. The researchers found that this amount of exercise reduced markers of inflammation in the body. Specifically, the 20-minute exercise session resulted in a 5 percent decrease in the number of immune cells that produced a protein called TNF, which is involved in the body's inflammatory response, the researchers said”. - livescience

“Moderate exercise has positive effects on the health of average athletes, such as a reduction in inflammation and intestinal permeability and an improvement in body composition. It also induces positive changes in the gut microbiota composition and in the microbial metabolites produced in the gastrointestinal tract”. - frontiersin

Can exercise guard against common colds?

Sister White: “Exercise in the invigorating air of heaven is necessary to a healthy circulation of the blood. It is the best safeguard against colds, coughs, and the internal congestions which lay the foundation of so many diseases”. Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 89, 1890

People who exercise regularly are less likely to get a cold, researchers say. A study of 1,000 people found that staying active nearly halved the odds of catching cold viruses and, failing that, made the infection less severe”. – BBC.co.uk

“The number of days with URTI (Upper-respiratory tract infection) during the 12-week period was significantly reduced, 43% in subjects reporting ≥5 days/week aerobic exercise compared to those who were largely sedentary (≤1 day/week) and 46% when comparing subjects in the high versus low fitness tertile. URTI severity and symptomatology were also reduced 32% to 41% between high and low aerobic activity and physical fitness tertiles”. - BJSM

Circulation

Does happiness improve blood flow?

Sister White: “The relation which exists between the mind and the body is very intimate. When one is affected, the other sympathizes. The condition of the mind affects the health of the physical system. If the mind is free and happy, from a consciousness of right-doing and a sense of satisfaction in causing happiness to others, it creates a cheerfulness that will react upon the whole system, causing a freer circulation of the blood, and a toning up of the entire body. The blessing of God is a healing power, and those who are abundant in benefiting others will realize that wondrous blessing in both heart and life”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 1890, page 13

“The researchers found that greater severity of sad mood and anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure) was associated with decreased CBF (Cerebral Blood Flow). This effect was particularly noted in the area of the brain called the anterior cingulate cortex, or ACC. This region, which helps process and regulate emotions, is known to be relevant to bipolar disorder, based on prior findings of structural and functional abnormalities”. - EEnet

Simplification: Researchers discovered that sad mood and anhedonia (lack of pleasure) have a negative effect on Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF), especially in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) region of the brain.

“The skin is the most sensitive organ in the body to assess a person’s happiness,” advises Dr Andrew Affleck, consultant dermatologist at BMI Fernbrae and BMI Albyn hospitals in Scotland. If you are happy and relaxed, your skin will be happy too, with optimal blood flow (not pale or too flushed), and no excess sweat that you can sometimes get if you are stressed or anxious. That’s something Dr Anton Alexandroff, consultant dermatologist at BMI The Manor Hospital in Bedford agrees with”. - Yahoo

Does mental effort increase blood flow to the brain?

Sister White: “Mental effort without corresponding physical exercise, calls an undue proportion of blood to the brain, and thus the circulation is unbalanced. The brain has too much blood, while the extremities have too little”. - Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 82, 1890

“When a group of our neurons get activated by thinking hard about a math problem or the vibrant colors of an exotic flower, within a single second blood flow to those brain cells increases a bit…But even the small increase can look a bit like overkill to scientists like O'Herron exploring the brain's physiology. He's among the scientists who've seen how not only are the activated neurons getting more blood and oxygen, but so is nearby tissue that has no clear involvement. It appears that even the firing brain cells are getting more than needed since oxygen levels in the blood remain higher than the norm past the point of action” - sciencedaily

Does quality of food affect circulation of blood?

Sister White: “If the mother is deprived of an abundance of wholesome, nutritious food, she will lack in the quantity and quality of bloodHer circulation will be poor, and her child will lack in the very same things”. – Testimonies for the church volume 2, 1868, page 381

“Multivariate analysis demonstrated that individuals in the highest LCDS (low carbohydrate diets) quartile had a significantly negative coefficient of saRHI (Small artery reactive hyperaemia index), which was independent of confounders (OR -0.85; 95 % CI 0.19, 0.92; P= 0.031). These findings suggest that a dietary pattern characterised by a low amount of carbohydrate, but high amounts of protein and fat, is associated with a poorer small artery vascular reactivity in patients with increased CV (cardiovascular) risk”. - pubmed

Simplification: A study looked at how different diets affected the blood vessels of people with a high risk of heart disease. The results showed that people who ate low carbohydrates and high amounts of protein and fat had weaker blood vessels. This was true even after taking into account other factors that could affect blood vessel health.

Parental exposure

Can drinking Alcohol whilst pregnant cause your children mental health problems?

Sister White: "Their children often receive this stamp of character before their birth; for the appetites of the parents are often intensified in the children. Thus unborn generations are afflicted by the use of tobacco and liquor. Intellectual decay is entailed upon them, and their moral perceptions are blunted. Thus the world is being filled with paupers, lunatics, thieves, and murderers. Disease, imbecility, and crime, with private and public corruptions of every sort, are making the world a second Sodom". - ST October 17, 1878, paragraph 9.

"In 1973, Jones et al. reported “the first association between maternal alcoholism and aberrant morphogenesis in the offspring.” The history of fetal alcohol syndrome reveals shortcomings in citation practice". -Ignored Papers, Invented Quotations: A History of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome | Neonatology | Karger Publishers

"Several studies have shown an increased risk for cognitive disorders (e.g., memory loss), mental illness, or psychological disorders among people with FASDs. The most frequently diagnosed disorders are: Attention problems, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)". - cdc

Can dietary choices of the mother affect children?

Sister White: “Women who possess principle, and who are well instructed, will not depart from simplicity of diet at this time of all others. They will consider that another life is dependent upon them, and will be careful in all their habits, and especially in diet. They should not eat that which is innutritious and exciting, simply because it tastes good. There are too many counselors ready to persuade them to do things which reason would tell them they ought not to do. Diseased children are born because of the gratification of appetite by the parents”. – testimony for the church volume 2, 1868, page 382

“Periconceptional administration of folic acid can reduce a woman's risk of having a fetus or infant with a neural-tube defect. As part of a public health campaign conducted from 1993 to 1995 in an area of China with high rates of neural-tube defects (the northern region) and one with low rates (the southern region)”. - pubmed

“These studies surrounding gene expression have also led to some people deciding to alter the way they eat and their lifestyle before and during pregnancy. While it’s always pertinent to be as healthy as possible, the belief is that altering the expression of genes and the ‘strength’ of DNA could be a way to give offspring more of a fighting chance. This is just a theory and not something that has been extensively studied but it’s interesting food for thought”. - healthguidance.org

Hereditary disease

Can tuberculosis be transmitted from birth?

Sister White: “Many women never should have become mothers. Their blood was filled with scrofula [tuberculosis of the neck], transmitted to them from their parents, and increased by their gross manner of living”. – Health or How to live, 1865, page 101

“Clinical and epidemiological surveys conducted since the 1910s have provided strong evidence that each step underlying infection or disease is controlled by host genetic factors. Familial aggregation studies have provided the most convincing evidence. In families with an index sputum-positive TB patient, spouses with family histories of TB were found to develop manifest TB more frequently than those without such histories… TB was long considered to be purely infectious, but there is increasing evidence to suggest that this disease also reflects host genetic vulnerability. However, the precise nature of the genetic factors involved remains largely unknown”. -National Library of Medicine

Simplification: Studies since 1910 have shown that genetics play a role in getting TB. Families with a history of TB are more likely to get it. TB was thought to only be spread by infection, but now it's known that genetics also plays a role. The specific genetic factors are still unknown.

Animal Agriculture

Liver disease in poorly contained animals?

Sister White: “There are but a few animals that are free from disease. They have been made to suffer greatly for the want of light, pure air, and wholesome food. When they are fattened, they are often confined in close stables, and are not permitted to exercise, and to have free circulation of air. Many poor animals are left to breathe the poison of filth which is left in barns and stables. Their lungs will not long remain healthy while inhaling such impurities. Disease is conveyed to the liver, and the entire system of the animal is diseased. They are killed, and prepared for the market, and people eat freely of this poisonous animal food. Much disease is caused in this manner. But people cannot be made to believe that it is the meat they have eaten, which has poisoned their blood, and caused their sufferings”. – Spiritual gifts, volume 4a, page 146, 1864

This study shows the bacteria present: “Large animal confinement feeding operations contain a wide-diversity of microbes with increasing focus on Gram-positive bacteria and archeabacteria as opposed to Gram-negative bacteria in mediating disease”. - National Library of Medicine

“The most frequent hepatic diseases encountered in slaughtered bovine are telangiectasia, hepatitis, perihepatitis (adhesions), fascioliasis, hydatidosis, tuberculosis (lung disease), abscesses, and cirrhosis. Studies in several Brazilian states show that the causes of liver condemnation vary according to the geographical region, because the majority of these causes, such as parasitic diseases or intoxications may vary according to the region. In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Brazil, the condemnation of livers due to brachiaria-induced fibrosis causes significant economic losses for the meat industry due to condemnation of beef liver with an estimate annual loss of more than R$ 100,000.00 in a single slaughterhouse”. – scielo.br

Do animals grieve their dead?

Sister White: “The intelligence displayed by many dumb animals approaches so closely to human intelligence that it is a mystery. The animals see and hear and love and fear and suffer. They use their organs far more faithfully than many human beings use theirs. They manifest sympathy and tenderness toward their companions in suffering. Many animals show an affection for those who have charge of them, far superior to the affection shown by some of the human race. They form attachments for man which are not broken without great suffering to them”. – Life and Health, September 1905

A growing body of scientific evidence supports the idea that nonhuman animals are aware of death, can experience grief and will sometimes mourn for or ritualize their dead”. – Smithsonian

Digestion

Can cold water with meals slow down digestion?

Sister White: “Many make a mistake in drinking cold water with their meals. Food should not be washed down. Taken with meals, water diminishes the flow of the saliva; and the colder the water, the greater the injury to the stomach. Ice-water or ice-lemonade, taken with meals, will arrest digestion until the system has imparted sufficient warmth to the stomach to enable it to take up its work again. Masticate slowly, and allow the saliva to mingle with the food”.  - Review and Herald, July 29, 1884

Cold water is said to slow down a person’s digestion, a fact that has been proven by a number of studies. While the exact reason has not been confirmed, there is one explanation that reigns above all, and most researchers agree

Having cold water or a cold drink reduces our body’s core temperature. It causes our blood vessels to constrict. Therefore, the body needs to spend valuable energy in bringing our core temperature back to normal. This energy could have instead been spent digesting the food we ate”. – scienceabc

The prevailing opinion of the day: “A well-regarded professor of several New York hospitals at the turn of the last century, the late William Gilman Thompson MD, included a chapter on the topic in his 1905 book, Practical Dietetics With Special Reference to Diet in Disease. In it, he writes: ‘One may begin a dinner with iced raw oysters, then take hot soup, and later conclude the meal with ice cream, followed by hot coffee,’ he said of a proposed diet. ‘And yet throughout, the temperature of the stomach contents does not vary so much as half a degree.’” – everydayhealth

How does food late at night affect sleep?

Sister White: “When we lie down at night, the stomach should have its work all done, that it, as well as other portions of the body, may enjoy rest. But if more food is forced upon it, the digestive organs are put in motion again, to perform the same round of labor through the sleeping hours. The sleep of such is often disturbed with unpleasant dreams, and in the morning they awake unrefreshed. When this practice is followed, the digestive organs lose their natural vigor, and the person finds himself a miserable dyspeptic”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 50, 1890

“Recently, a study by the University of Montreal, discovered a correlation between food, eating before bed and nightmares. In their study, they found that 9.5% of the study’s participants reported a link between late eating and nightmares”. - restonic

“Among a large sample of university undergraduates, we found evidence supporting two general ideas about how food influences dreamsFirst, results show that a substantial proportion of individuals (17.8%) perceive that food can render their dreams more bizarre or disturbing. These individuals are able to provide examples—some quite specific—of foods that they believe affect their dreams; as well, many of them perceive that eating late at night can affect their dreams. Second, we found evidence that disturbing dreams and vivid dreams are, in general, associated with several factors related to food consumption, such as different motivations for eating, with the effects for disturbing dreams being largely mediated by sleep quality”. – Academia.edu

Does frequent eating damage the stomach and lead to dyspepsia?

Sister White “Many indulge in the pernicious habit of eating just before retiring. They may have taken their regular meals, yet because they feel a sense of faintness they think they must have a lunch. By indulging this wrong practice it becomes a habit, and they feel as though they could not sleep without food. In many cases this faintness comes because the digestive organs have been too severely taxed through the day in disposing of the great quantity of food forced upon them. These organs need a period of entire rest from labor, to recover their exhausted energies… When this practice is followed, the digestive organs lose their natural vigor, and the person finds himself a miserable dyspeptic”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 1890

“Indeed, obesity has been identified as a risk factor for developing functional dyspepsia, particularly obesity is related to impaired gastric motility, gastric emptying rates, and to an increase in gastric volume”. - mdpi

“Eating dinner late can actually be detrimental to your health. This is a reason why as many as 40 percent of Americans suffer from acid reflux, an epidemic including symptoms like – heartburn, indigestion, postnasal drip, hoarseness, difficulty in swallowing, chronic throat clearing, coughing, and asthma”. – Fccmg

Does overeating burden the liver?

Sister White: “The digestive organs should never be burdened with a quantity or quality of food which it will tax the system to appropriate. All that is taken into the stomach, above what the system can use to convert into good blood, clogs the machinery; for it cannot be made into either flesh or blood, and its presence burdens the liver, and produces a morbid condition of the system”. – testimonies for the church volume 2, 1868, page 412

“In 1885, Bartholow reported a potential association between obesity and fatty liver… In 1980, the term nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) was coined by Ludwig et al., to describe the progressive form of fatty liver disease histologically resembling alcoholic steatohepatitis though observed in patients who denied any alcohol abuse. The majority of patients were obese women, and many were diabetic”. – National Library of Medicine

Can mental effort slow down digestion?

Sister White: “To engage in deep study or violent exercise immediately after eating, hinders the digestive process; for the vitality of the system, which is needed to carry on the work of digestion, is called away to other parts. But a short walk after a meal, with the head erect and the shoulders back, exercising moderately, is a great benefit. The mind is diverted from self to the beauties of nature. The less the attention is called to the stomach, the better” – Letters and manuscripts, Ms2, 1870

“This ‘brain-gut axis’ helps explain why researchers are interested in understanding how psychological or social stress might cause digestive problems. When a person becomes stressed enough to trigger the fight-or-flight response, for example, digestion slows or even stops so that the body can divert all its internal energy to facing a perceived threat. In response to less severe stress, such as public speaking, the digestive process may slow or be temporarily disrupted, causing abdominal pain and other symptoms of functional gastrointestinal disorders. Of course, it can work the other way as well: persistent gastrointestinal problems can heighten anxiety and stress”. – Harvard health

Fashion

Does makeup pass the skin and pollute the blood?

Sister White: “Many are ignorantly injuring their health and endangering their life by using cosmetics. They are robbing the cheeks of the glow of health, and then to supply the deficiency use cosmetics. When they become heated in the dance the poison is absorbed by the pores of the skin, and is thrown into the blood. Many lives have been sacrificed by this means alone”. – The Health Reformer, October 1st, 1871

“…First, because cosmetics are applied directly and are often designed specifically to be absorbed by the skin—think wrinkle creams and anti-perspirant—their ingredients also penetrate the body and join the bloodstream, where they may cause unknown internal harm. This in combination with the daily use of at least several such products amounts to exceptional exposure”. -Skin deep | Sustainability at Harvard

Can braiding cause hair loss?

Sister White: “Fashion loads the heads of women with artificial braids and pads, which do not add to their beauty, but give an unnatural shape to the head. The hair is strained and forced into unnatural positions, and it is not possible for the heads of these fashionable ladies to be comfortable. The artificial hair and pads covering the base of the brain, heat and excite the spinal nerves centering in the brain…The unnatural heat caused by these artificial deformities about the head, induces the blood to the brain, producing congestion, and causing the natural hair to fall off, producing baldness. Thus the natural is sacrificed to the artificial”. – The Health Reformer 1871

“The term alopecia refers to hair loss. Traction alopecia is hair loss that’s caused by repeatedly pulling on your hair. You can develop this condition if you often wear your hair in a tight ponytail, bun, or braids, especially if you use chemicals or heat on your hair…Doctors in Greenland first identified the condition in the early 1900s. They discovered that women who wore tight ponytails had lost hair along their hairline”. - healthline

Traction alopecia is condition seen commonly associated with Afro-Caribbean hairstyles like tight braids. The onset of hair loss occurs commonly in the temporal regions, preauricular region and above the ears but may involve other parts of the scalp, particularly where "corn row" patterns are adopted”. – National Library of Medicine

Hydrotherapy

Does bathing sooth the nerves and improve circulation of blood?

Sister White: “Persons in health should on no account neglect frequent bathing. Whether a person is sick or well, respiration is rendered more free and full by bathing. The mind and body are alike invigorated. The muscles become more flexible, every faculty of the intellect is made brighter. The bath is a soother of the nerves. Instead of increasing the liability of taking cold, it fortifies against cold, because it improves the circulation; the blood is brought to the surface, and a more easy and regular flow of the vital fluid is obtained”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 1890, page 107

“During bathing, several actions unique to bathing will be exerted on the body, including hyperthermic action, hydrostatic pressure, buoyancy, and viscosity of water. The most important of these is hyperthermic action, which warms the blood in superficial vessels, thereby increasing the deep body temperature through circulation. With an increase in body temperature, heat-sensitive neurons are excited while cold-sensitive neurons are inhibited in the thermoregulatory center of the hypothalamuscausing inhibition of the sympathetic nerves and stimulation of the parasympathetic nerves, leading to vasodilatation and induced perspiration to decrease the body temperature. Heart rate will rise by 40% to 50%, and peripheral pO2 will increase while pCO2 will decrease, thereby stimulating metabolism and inducing elimination of metabolic waste materials, which in turn refreshes the body. In terms of hydrostatic pressure, it induces venous flow, thereby increasing cardiac output and improving metabolism”. – National Library of medicine

Does bathing positively affect the kidneys?

Sister White: “By bathing, the muscles become more flexible, the mind and body are alike invigorated, the intellect is clearer, and every faculty is livelier. The bath is a soother of the nerves. It promotes general perspiration, quickens the circulation, overcomes obstructions in the system, and acts beneficially on the kidneys. Bathing helps the bowels, stomach, and liver, giving energy and new life. Digestion is promoted by bathing, and instead of the system being weakened, it is strengthened. Instead of increasing liabilities to cold, a bath properly taken fortifies against a cold, because the circulation is improved. The blood is brought to the surface, and a more easy and regular flow through all the blood vessels is obtained”. -Health reformer, 1872, par 18

Note: TCM stands for Traditional Chinese Medicine and chronic renal failure is the technical term for the decrease in ability of the kidneys ability to filter waste from the blood.

In conclusions, TCMs-mediated hot bath can dehydrate and clear uremic toxins by skin eccrine sweating in patients with chronic renal failure (disease of kidneys), decrease their skin complications and frequencies of adverse events (cardiovascular events, infection, or complications of dialysis). Therefore, it offers an adjuvant alternative renal replacement method for these subjects to reduce the frequency of dialysis due to its complications”. - tandfonline

It's not the specific bathing method (Chinese medicine) which is needed for the benefit, whilst the study was testing that, it’s the act of bathing and the effects that follow that cause the benefits. Less waste is kept in the body.

Mycology

Do decaying leaves poison the atmosphere?

Sister White: “But shade trees and shrubbery close and dense around a house, make it unhealthful; for they prevent the free circulation of air, and shut out the rays of the sun. In consequence, a dampness gathers in the house, especially in wet seasons. Those who occupy the sleeping-rooms are troubled with rheumatism, neuralgia, and lung complaints. Then the great quantities of fallen leaves, if not removed immediately, decay, and poison the atmosphere. Dwellings, if possible, should be built on high ground. If a house is built where the water will settle around it, remaining for a time and slowly drying away, there is a poisonous miasma continually rising from the damp ground, which breeds sore throat, fevers, ague, or lung diseases”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 1890, page 107

“Aspergillosis is usually caused by inhaling tiny bits of mould. The mould is found in lots of places, including: soil, compost and rotting leaves”. – NHS.UK

“Aspergillosis is caused by breathing in small particles, called spores, of aspergillus in the air. Aspergillus is a common type of fungus (mould). Find out how to stop mould from growing in your home.

Can mould (spelled mold in US English) lead to lung problems?

Sister White: “I observe in California that many, during the rainy season, are suffering with colds, catarrh, sore throat, lung difficulties, neuralgia, and rheumatismI can understand the reason of these maladies. The main parts of most of the houses are destitute of fire-places and stoves. In the rainy season dampness must affect rooms that have no fires. These sleeping apartments cannot be dried in continuous wet weather. The bedding must become damp, and will be musty unless dried before a fire. This is seldom done. In addition to this neglect of fires in sleeping apartments, air and light are generally excluded by closed windows and heavy curtains. But few seem to understand that the air in these closed rooms becomes impure and unfit for the lungs. Those who occupy such apartments cannot have health. The emanations from damp, moldy rooms and clothing are poisonous to the system. .—The Health Reformer, February 1, 1874

“In this article, we have presented abundant evidence of associations of various respiratory health outcomes with mold exposure and some potential disease mechanisms. Thus, even if we do not fully understand specific causal agents or mechanisms for mold-related illnesses yet, it is very sensible for physicians, environmental professionals, and building managers to recognize potential risk of exposure to mold and support proactive measures for remediation of water-damage and mold contamination to protect occupants’ health. The major driving force for mold and other microbial growth in indoor environments is moisture”. - imrpress

Note: Sister White also mentioned that mould can lead to Rheumatism (arthritis), whilst the scientific community catches up, there is a study in mice which concluded that mold toxins increase the susceptibility to Rheumatoid arthritis. With another study looking at a case study of 34 people.

“Our results demonstrate that mycotoxins increase the susceptibility to develop RA Rheumatism arthritis, via an enhanced stimulation of macrophages and promotion of Th1/Th17 cell differentiation by induction of Stat signalling pathways and down-regulation of the Socs-mediated feedback inhibition”. – National Library of Medicine

“Rheumatic diseases do not usually cluster in time and space. It has been proposed that environmental exposures may initiate autoimmune responses. We describe a cluster of rheumatic diseases among a group of health center employees who began to complain of symptoms typically related to moldy houses, including mucocutaneous symptoms, nausea and fatigue, within a year of moving into a new building. Dampness was found in the insulation space of the concrete floor below ground level. Microbes indicating mold damage and actinobacteria were found in the flooring material and in the outer wall insulation. The case histories of the personnel involved were examined. All 34 subjects working at the health center had at least some rheumatic complaints. Two fell ill with a typical rheumatoid factor (RF)-positive rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and 10 had arthritis that did not conform to any definite arthritic syndrome (three met the classification criteria for RA)”. – National Library of Medicine

Does proper ventilation and drier air help to prevent mold?

Sister White: “During the rainy season in California, or anywhere else, when the sun does shine, we should make the most of it. Every room in our dwellings should be daily thrown open to the healthful rays of the sun, and the purifying air should be invited in. This will be a preventive of disease. We would say to our friends, If you think that clouds and rain bring dampness and endanger health, God sends to you his blessed, healthful sunshine, and pure, dry air. Will you welcome these great blessings by opening to these guests every room in your dwellings? If all would appreciate the sunshine, and expose every article of clothing to its drying, purifying rays, mildew and mold would be prevented”. —The Health Reformer, February 1, 1874

“Indoor mold has historically been treated as a nuisance contaminant. Two decades ago, there was little guidance for responding to fungal contamination in buildings beyond the general instruction to clean it up. That began to change as more became known about the potential hazards of mold exposures and the practice of remediation. In 1980, allergists suggested removing mold-contaminated materials and cleaning affected areas (Kozak et al., 1980). In the same year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture published a bulletin advising people to control dampness and to treat contaminated materials with bleach (USDA, 1980). Four years later, Morey et al. (1984) recommended moisture control, improved filtration, and ventilation with outdoor air to prevent mold problems. Intervening in the moisture dynamic, cleaning contamination from hard-surface materials, and carefully discarding contaminated porous materials were suggested for dealing with existing problems. For the first time, respirators were proposed for workers performing remediation. No recommendations for containment were included”. – National Library of Medicine

“Mould is likely to occur if the relative humidity indoors is 70% or more for long periods of time. Keeping humidity levels under 50% also helps to minimise or control dust mites. But it is also possible to live in a house that is too dry!” – oxford.gov

Can the oil from olives aid in constipation?

Sister White:  “The oil in olives is a remedy for constipation and kidney diseases” – letters and manuscripts, 1901

“We demonstrated that the daily use of olive oil or flaxseed oil was as effective as mineral oil in the treatment of constipation in patients undergoing hemodialysis…The Rome III (Diagnosis criteria for constipation) score improved significantly in patients receiving mineral oil (10.5 ± 5.0 to 4.1 ± 4.0; P < .01), olive oil (10.3 ± 4.2 to 3.2 ± 3.8; P = .01), and flaxseed oil (9.6 ± 4.2 to 6.0 ± 5.1; P < .01),”. – Journal of renal nutrition

Can oil from olives aid in kidney diseases?

Sister White: “The oil in olives is a remedy for constipation and kidney diseases” – letters and manuscripts, 1901

“Our study shows that daily use of an EVOO [Extra virgin olive oil] with high MPC [minor polar compounds] content seems to exert an important anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action in nephropathic [disease of the kidneys] patients. Therefore, once again, the pivotal role that nutritional-diet therapy plays in the clinical management of CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] patients and the consequential improvements in their quality of life, exerting positive effects on CKD [Chronic Kidney Disease] signs and symptoms, has been highlighted”. – National Library of medicine

Is there a danger in overworking?

Sister White: “As a rule, the labor of the day should not be prolonged into the evening. If all the hours of the day are well improved, the work extended into the evening is so much extra, and the overtaxed system will suffer from the burden imposed upon it. I have been shown that those who do this, often lose much more than they gain, for their energies are exhausted, and they labor on nervous excitement. They may not realize any immediate injury, but they are surely undermining their constitution”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, page 65, 1890

Do fish become contaminated in water sites close and far to sewage?

Sister White: “in many places fish become so contaminated by the filth on which they feed as to be a cause of disease. This is especially the case where the fish come in contact with the sewage of large cities. The fish that are fed on the contents of the drains may pass into distant waters, and may be caught where the water is pure and fresh. Thus when used as food, they bring disease and death on those who do not suspect the danger”. – Life and health, 1905

“Presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria as bio-indicators of pollution was monitored in fish (colons and gills) and in sewage treated effluent (STE) in two marine sites in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat. One site was polluted as the sewage effluent STE was directly discharged into the sea while the unpolluted site was 10 km away. A total of 42 water samples (250 mL each) were collected from both sites. In the polluted site, 14 samples were taken directly from the STE discharge point and 14 from the surrounding area near the STE discharging point (7–10 m). Water and fish samples were collected from polluted and unpolluted sites… This is a clear indication that sewage effluent causes contamination of marine wildlife along coastal lines”. - sciencedirect

“‘Decaying fish can act as a sink for the spread of harmful bacteria to scavenging fish and birds. Fish caught in areas downstream of effluent [sewage pipe] outlets may also pose a health risk to anglers,’ says Craig, a professor of biology and a member of Waterloo’s Water Institute”. – university of waterloo

Is white bread nutritious?

Sister White: “For use in bread-making, the superfine white flour is not the best. Its use is neither healthful nor economical. Fine-flour bread is lacking in nutritive elements to be found in bread made from the whole wheat. It is a frequent cause of constipation and other unhealthful conditions”. – Life and Health, 1905

Clive Maine McCay (21 March 1898 – 8 June 1967) was an American biochemist, nutritionist and gerontologist. Here’s what he had to say on Ellen White

“Near the end of Mrs. White’s life in 1915 men began to appreciate that the milling of white flour removed most of the vitamins, part of the protein, and the important trace minerals such as iron. However, even nutritional authorities were very slow to inveigh against white bread. Today nutritionists know that these vital constituents are lost when the bran and germ are taken from the wheat. Mrs. White wrote, ‘For use in breadmaking, the superfine white flour is not the best. Its use is neither healthful nor economical. Fine-flour bread is lacking in nutritive elements to be found in bread made from the whole wheat’” - NADEGW 7.1

“White bread might be softer, more delicate, and a consumer’s preferred choice, but a big disadvantage is its lack of nutrients. Vitamins and minerals mainly reside in the outer layer of a wheat kernel and it’s this layer that gets stripped when transforming whole wheat flour into white flour. Scientists and army recruiters started to notice, in the ’30s [1930s] and early ’40s [1940s] that large parts of the population were unfit for service because of vitamin and mineral deficiencies. The USA wasn’t the only country affected, various European countries faced similar challenges. Each country solved for this differently. In some countries, wholewheat flour was promoted to the consumer or regulations forced the use of wholewheat flour. In the USA though, another approach was taken”. - foodcrumbles

Can hot food damage the throat?

Sister White: “Hot drinks are not requiredexcept as a medicine. The stomach is greatly injured by a large quantity of hot food and hot drink. Thus the throat and digestive organs, and through them the other organs of the body, are enfeebled”. – letters and manuscripts, 1901

Thermal injury to the larynx and other pharyngeal structures, such as the tongue, airway, or esophagus, can result from ingestion of excessively hot foods. Thermal injury from the ingestion of hot food is a rare occurrence, particularly in an adult population. Since the 1970’s, only a few cases have been reported in the literature…”. - smrj

Does fire conduct electricity?

Sister White: “In the day of the Lord, just before the coming of Christ, God will send lightnings from Heaven in his wrath, which will unite with fire in the earth. The mountains will burn like a furnace, and will pour forth terrible streams of lava, destroying gardens and fields, villages and cities; and as they pour their melted ore, rocks and heated mud into the rivers, will cause them to boil like a pot, and send forth massive rocks and scatter their broken fragments upon the land with indescribable violence”. Spiritual Gifts, volume 3, page 82, 1864

Do plant foods improve cognitive function?

Sister white: “Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect, that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet”. – Life and health, 1905

Is a diet of Grains, fruits, nuts and vegetables the most healthful?

Sister white: “Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect, that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet”. – Life and health, 1905

“It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits for the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease. Vegans need reliable sources of vitamin B-12, such as fortified foods or supplements”. - jandonline

Whilst many seventh-day Adventists don’t even follow the tenants of health reform, that Sister White laid out, some groups which are more conservative in belief do. This had led to results such as this: “In an attempt to "reverse engineer longevity," Dan Buettner has spent years researching the parts of the world where people live much longer than average. Most of those locations are outside the United States -- including Sardinia, Italy, and Okinawa, Japan -- but there is one long-living group stateside. It's the Seventh-day Adventists, who live an average of 10 years longer than the American life expectancy of about 79 years”. - huffpost

Overall, research is slowly catching up to the testimonies God gave to Sister White.

Sister White: “Many have inquired of me, ‘What course shall I take to best preserve my health?’ My answer is, Cease to transgress the laws of your being; cease to gratify a depraved appetite; eat simple food; dress healthfully, which will require modest simplicity; work healthfully; and you will not be sick”. – The health reformer, 1868

Can eating meat transmit tuberculosis?

Sister White: “Flesh was never the best food; but its use is now doubly objectionable, since disease in animals is rapidly increasing. Those who use flesh foods little know what they are eating. Often if they could see the animals when living, and know the quality of the meat they eat, they would turn from it with loathing. People are continually eating flesh that is filled with tuberculosis and cancerous germs. Tuberculosis, cancer, and other fatal diseases are thus communicated”. Life and Health, 1905 — Ellen G. White Writings (egwwritings.org)

In 2013: “The Food Standards Agency has confirmed there are no known cases where TB has been transmitted through eating meat and the risk of infection from eating meat, even if raw or undercooked, remains extremely low”. -TB infected cattle sold as meat for human consumption – Channel 4 News

“During a symposium at the 46th World Conference on Lung Health in Cape Town, South Africa, in early December, Scott presented new findings that showed that cases of bovine TB in the United States were found to be significantly higher among Hispanic communities. According to Scott, up to 44% of Hispanic people infected with TB were found to have the bovine form of the disease”. - CNN

“In 2021, an estimated 10.6 million people fell ill with tuberculosis(TB) worldwide. Six million men, 3.4 million women and 1.2 million children. TB is present in all countries and age groups. But TB is curable and preventable”. – Who.int

Does parental diet choice affect child development?

“There was a lack in the quantity and in the quality. Her system required changes, a variety and quality of food that was more nourishing. Her children were born with feeble digestive powers and impoverished blood. From the food the mother was compelled to receive, she could not furnish a good quality of blood, and therefore gave birth to children filled with humors. In the first place, B should not have committed so great a crime as to bring into being children that reason must teach him would be diseased because they must receive a miserable legacy from their parents. They must have a bad inheritance transmitted to them. Their blood must be filled with scrofulous humors from both parents, especially the father, whose habits have been such as to corrupt the blood and enervate his whole system. Not only must these poor children receive a scrofulous tendency in a double sense, but what is worse, they will bear the mental and moral deficiencies of the father, and the lack of noble independence, moral courage, and force in the mother”. – Testimonies for the church volume 2

“I have been shown that children who practice self-indulgence previous to puberty, or the period of merging into manhood and womanhood, must pay the penalty of nature's violated laws at that critical period. Many sink into an early grave, while others have sufficient force of constitution to pass this ordeal. If the practice is continued from the ages of fifteen and upward, nature will protest against the abuse she has suffered, and continues to suffer, and will make them pay the penalty for the transgression of her laws, especially from the ages of thirty to forty-five, by numerous pains in the system, and various diseases, such as affection of the liver and lungs, neuralgia, rheumatism, affection of the spine, diseased kidneys, and cancerous humors. Some of nature's fine machinery gives way, leaving a heavier task for the remaining to perform, which disorders nature's fine arrangement, and there is often a sudden breaking down of the constitution, and death is the result”. – An appeal to mothers (reprinted by James White)

Can everyone digest the same?

Sister White: “There is real common sense in health reform. People cannot all eat the same things. Some articles of food that are wholesome and palatable to one person, may be hurtful to another. Some cannot use milk, while others can subsist upon it. For some, dried beans and peas are wholesome, while others cannot digest them. Some stomachs have become so sensitive that they cannot make use of the coarser kind of graham flour. So it is impossible to make an unvarying rule by which to regulate every one's dietetic habits”. – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 1890, page 57

Do not say to yourself, “I digest meat or cheese fine therefore it’s good for me”. The starting point is grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, legumes and herbs. From these foods you see what you can eat. As we’ve seen previously milk has now become very diseased for many, hence it wouldn’t be safe anymore.

“Large quantities of milk and sugar eaten together are injurious. They impart impurities to the system. Animals from which milk is obtained are not always healthy. Could we know that animals were in perfect health, I would recommend that people eat flesh-meats sooner than large quantities of milk and sugar. It would not do the injury that milk and sugar do”.  – Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, 1890, page 158

“We have always used a little milk and some sugar. This we have never denounced, either in our writings or in our preaching. We believe cattle will become so much diseased that these things will yet be discarded, but the time has not yet come for sugar and milk to be wholly abolished from our tables”. – letters and manuscripts

When is meat okay?

Sister White: “In certain cases of illness or exhaustion it may be thought best to use some meat, but great care should be taken to secure the flesh of healthy animals. It has come to be a very serious question whether it is safe to use flesh-food at all in this age of the world. It would be better never to eat meat than to use the flesh of animals that are not healthy. When I could not obtain the food I needed, I have sometimes eaten a little meat; but I am becoming more and more afraid of it”. - CTBH 117.3

This statement was made much earlier hence, the time for when flesh meat is no longer safe appears to be well passed. However, if there was a culture, where the only food they could ever possibly obtain was meat, everything would have to be done with Biblical jurisprudence. If one is rich enough to read this message, they are most likely not in that category. To put things simply in these end times, meat eating will be done away with among the saved as we prepare for the new Jerusalem, where we will eat no meat.

“my great-grandma has been eating and living this way smoking/drinking caffeine and lived till 108”!

Sister White: “Those who use tea, coffee, opium, and alcohol, may sometimes live to old age, but this fact is no argument in favor of the use of these stimulants. What these persons might have accomplished, but failed to do because of their intemperate habits, the great day of God alone will reveal”.  – CTBH 34.5

The dangers of eating meat is largely undetected.

Sister White: “Those who subsist largely upon meat, cannot avoid sometimes eating flesh which is more or less diseased. In many cases the process of fitting animals for market produces an unhealthy condition. Shut away from light and pure air, inhaling the atmosphere of filthy stables, the entire body soon becomes contaminated with foul matter; and when such flesh is received into the human body, it corrupts the blood, and disease is produced. If the person already has impure blood, this unhealthful condition will be greatly aggravated. But few can be made to believe that it is the meat they have eaten which has poisoned their blood and caused their suffering. Many die of diseases wholly due to meat-eating, when the real cause is scarcely suspected by themselves or others. Some do not immediately feel its effects, but this is no evidence that it does not hurt them. It may be doing its work surely upon the system, yet for the time being the victim may realize nothing of it”. - CTBH 47.3
